Ya'll with Kids in the NG or AR.

Seeing BigBore's post of his daughter coming home made me think about this. I know there are few of ya'll on here with kids in the reserve components of the Army. I am not knocking that, they are doing their part and it speaks highly of ya'll that you raised them so they want to serve in some capacity and do their part.....BUT,
If any of them want to go Active or have a remote interest in going Active, they need to talk to an in service recruiter NOW...LIKE MONDAY NOW....The Army retention goals are changing almost weekly. We were told Wednesday that anyone who is eligible to re-enlist this FY, has to do so by Jan 31. After Jan 31 it is "thanks for coming out, see ya around the VA." Some are being pushed into other Jobs. IE, the army is getting rid of the 25F MOS and the new 25N is full. But, we are short 35L. So if they want to stay in, they will have to Re-class to a completely unrelated field. That will put a SSG behind the power curve by two years if he/she is sharp, 3-5 years on the average.
It is tough job market right now. I am the only person in my family employed at the moment. The last few Soldiers I know that ETS'd with hopes of landing the dream contracts are having to go to school and use the post 9/11 so they can bring in money while they flip burgers. And I am talking about genuine IT/RF studs here...They just didn't have the certs or whatever contractors are looking for.
ALSO, anyone looking to go GS, the Army is now enforcing DoDD 8570 standards
PSA complete.

Next they will start going after the lard arses..................again
I agree, if you can go active, they should do it now while they may need your skill sets.

Agree completely. My grandson (just back from Afganistan this month with a wife and 2 kids to support) has to make that decision NOW. I think he will probably re-up.
I got caught in that same scenario in 1984 after 16 years active. Just made E-7, good record, commendations etc., and it was just "good by". No bennies, no KMA, nada nothing. Sure changed my live overnight.
I am seriously considering calling AMEDD (Army MEDical Department) to see about being transferred to Active Duty for my somewhat unique MOS series (67J series, MEDEVAC Officer). Looks like I need to do that sooner than later. Thank the Lord that USAR MEDEVAC units still have the mission in correlation with FEMA, and thus are deemed "important."

You may may wanna give that some serious considerations to go on Active Duty while the getting is good. Just thunk of all the guns you can buy with a full-time paycheck as a single LT in the Army :guns:

To greatly over simplify the mission, here is how it was explained to me: After the Katrina cluster eff, FEMA and the Goobermint came crawling to the Army for a may to improve things.
But yes, I'll see if I can pull some strings, but I may have to wait a bit.

The way things are moving and the people that have been put in key positions will cut the big army and leave SOCOM to do its thing. Insurgency/COIN will be the fight of the future. It is cheap, effective, and demoralizes. Fighting that has always been SOCOM's forte. Oh, guess who the new man on the hill is...Panetta. Who has he always used to get his missions done...SOCOM. He sees no need for a big army. The new ARmy Chief of Staff couldn't spell Operational or define operational even if you left the dictionary open on his desk with the word highlighted. Hell that dude couldn't even fix TRADOC.
FEMA will take a hit and do what it has done for years. Rely on the 18th ABN Corps to come through. They have done this through out their existence. They did it with Katrina, they did it with Ivan, they even did it with Andrew back in the 90's.
Now I have been wrong once or twice before. But once again, I stress if you are going to make the move or your kids are thinking about switching over, they need to talk to someone about it today. I mean really..Today Monday the 28th. Friday may be too late.
