Austin City Limits

Sam's post about Marcia Ball got me to thinking about this TV program. When I was younger (much younger), I watched it quite a bit. It usually featured bands/artists who were very, very good, but had not quite broke through to national prominence. Some of these went on to become big, and some didn't.

One program I recall featured the group "Pure Prairie League". They had a song that I really liked, and was played a lot on local stations. The title of the song was "Amy". I"ll bet that there are some who remember the group and the song.

One of the things that I remember about this particular performance was that one of the backup singers/guitar players was someone who was either Vince Gill or could have passed for Vince. His hair was at least shoulder length, but he sure looked like Vince.

Any way, it's fun to reminesce, and this is one of my fonder memories. Does/has anyone else watch/watched this program?

Vince Gill was a member of Pure Prarie League.

I remember watching various shows. Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, the Allman Brothers, Emmylou Harris...

Austin City Limits has been a long time fave of mine, and although they occasionally have a "slow" show, usually the show is worth tuning in. You get both newbie groups and well-known groups. One of the few good shows that PBS offers.

One of my old favorites, too. And I, too, like "Amy" by PPL, though the rest of that particular album was pretty tragic.
And yes, Vince Gill was a member of the band, but not until after "Amy" had already been recorded.

I'm going to have to work that song up on guitar. I haven't tried it for years. Hopefully my guitar is getting better the older it gets. It's been a decades long chore getting it to learn anything at all.

edit: It's entirely possible that Vince was a member of the band by the time they did ACL. But, it's not him on the album version of the song.

As I recall, the episode I saw of ACL was well after the song AMY had made its run. It was no longer played a lot on the radio. Probably late 70s.

I am a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan and was in Austin when he appeared on ACL just before he was killed. We were lucky enough to make it in because it was some special birthday show he was part of and I think it might seat only like 2000 people. It was 1 of the best places for a concert I ever attended. Evrytime I go back I think about going but never make it cause of some reason (she shall remain nameless). Anyway I watch it on PBS a coiple time a month depending on time and who's preforming.
