Try using A Barnes Bullet. Hit a hog in the vitals and it's not getting up.

    Very cool.

When you going to do the testing?

It rained last night and this morning. Starting to clear up now. Maybe this afternoon. Any recommendations on procedures?

I'd try for meat only. Then meat and bone. Same bullet of course.

The hams are only so big. If I do multiples of same Bullet, I won't have room to do multiple calibers.

We really got to work on that. I'm very against the " will have-to-use-non-lead-everywhere-in-California-by-2019" hippie hoopla, but having seen how accurate they can be, how they penetrate, and seen three deer die REALLY fast from them, I can find no fault with the bullets themselves. They're really a lot like a hard cast bullet. . .with the added benefit of an archery broadhead on the front end once they open up.

The hog ham is shot. The data is downloading. Stand by for results in another thread.

I don't think you like girls either. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

I have dropped a few pigs at close rang with .45acp. I found FMJ is better than HP ammo it needs to be something on the hot side and they need to be close. I agree it is not a primary caliber for pig hunting!

My cousin used a .45 ACP to dispatch hogs at close range (hunting with dogs in South Texas). No problems. But, given the range you are hunting at, I just don't think any "pistol" round will perform that well.

Btw - the ham tests are fantastic.

Thanks. Yes, up close and personal, I'm sure the results would be quite different. As the distance grows..........no so much.

That was some good shooting Zee. Got a bunch here in Fl. When they start to run they are impressively quick. Hitting one with a follow-up shot is impressive. Good work.

Thanks. I was pretty excited about this hunt. Even if the bullet performance was less than expected. It was still fun from start to finish.

I enjoy distance shooting. But, I prefer being sneaky and getting up close.

I shot one back in 1990 or 91 that was wounded and decided to charge my friend. Hog was running right by me and I had my 1911 with 230 gr fmj. Point blank in the head...DRT. I wonder if an XTP loaded warm would expand properly. I use them a bunch. I also load them in sabots for Muzzleloader. Dropped an 8 point and two hogs on opening day 10-23-2-10. Worked fine in that situation. I was using 100 grs pyrodex. Not super hot but faster than a 1911. I bet and XTP or some Cor-bons might do a bit better. I hear the 200 gr Cor-bons loaded to a moderate level in 44 spl work great. Don't see why it wouldn't work in the 1911.

I really like the XTP bullets that I have used. Both in my .44 Mags and my .45 Colts, as well as the .445 Super Mag and .430 SJS.

    Perfect performance.

I still think you don't girls. Barnes Bullets out perform XTP AMMO. I never had to take a second shot on any of the big game I have shot. I shot a 300 lb wild boar and the guy I was with asked "What was that flying though the air ?
    My reply was meat !

I can get 200 XTP bullets for the price of 50 Barnes. To get the same terminal performance and accuracy bullet for bullet at a fraction of the cost just makes sense in my book.

You can stick to Barnes and girls. I'll take women and XTPs.

The XTP's seem to be every bit as accurate as my best cast lead bullet loads. It wasnt until your for science postings that I saw their terminal performance.
My thoughts are generally clear. My typing, not so much.

Interesting results, not quite what I would have expected.

Do you think a lighter bullet traveling much faster say 185 gr bullet at 1200fps would perform better, or is the distance just too much for the .45acp?

I may be wrong, but I think a lighter bullet would just loose velocity faster and terminal velocity would be about or close to the same. And the heavier bullet may have penetrated better than a lighter one. So I don't think it would have made much difference. Hey, you killed the pig. With a 45 ACP which is designed for REAL Up Close and Personal work, you did about as well as could be expected.

I believe you when you say Barnes makes great bullets. My son has used them in his .270 AND his .25-06 with good results.

But I just don't think at the ranges Zee is shooting hogs and the MV of a .45 ACP that it takes that quality of bullet. And, I don't think you can even tell the difference in bullets at that speed and range. I doubt any bullet would expand well at that range speed with a .45 ACP. The bullet is starting out under a thousand feet per second>

I would bet money that he's right on in saying the reason it didn't expand was the low velocity.
