After being skunked last weekend, I was determined to get a deer. So, I got up at the rear crack of the morning and headed out on my own. My usual hunting partners all had kid stuff to do.
Driving to the property, I almost hit a whole bunch of deer with the truck. One was literally just a few feet of my bumper as I swerved and missed it. That is better than coffee to wake you up.
Then I damn near got lost in the dark as I stepped into a covey of sleeping quail who flushed from the grass and scared he everloving crap out of me. I lost my bearings for a few moments and then got to my blind a little later than j like but still in full dark.
As the light came up i could see there were deer under the feeder. Four of them, two small, and two medium sized. I was trying to figure out which to shoot when it got light enough to see the headgear on this guy. I decided he was my cull for the season. So, I tried to get a bead on him with the cva scout pistol, but the low light was not playing well with the weaver scope. So I pulled in the backup- the DPMS LR- 308 with redfield 3-9. By the time I got everything lined up, he had fed toward me and was within 50 yards. I lined up and sent a Hornady AMAX through the top of his head.
And that's why the pic was at that angle. He went... Um... 'Popeye' if you know what I mean.
Anyway- I am now watching a 6 point at the feeder, wondering if he will be my other buck for the year. I am in a 2 buck county, and we need to cull a bunch of these out.

Well a boy in Michigan we used to hunt near a town called Cadillac. Partridge don't like to fly and will wait and flap right up in your face whenever you're unwary. Grouse do it out here on occasion, but not like them ol' pats did.

Head shot deer in my experience are normally better eating/tender than lung or heart shot animals that manage to run after the shot. Should be great eating.
Years back when I was hot and heavy into culling deer for ranches, I was all about head shots. It was quick and easy to clean up afterwards as there was no blood in the thoracic cavity.
Now days, I prefer the education I get from the terminal performance study on body shots.
Someone asked me a while ago why I do so many headshots. Basically it's because I'm a better shooter than I am a tracker. And in this area, when a deer runs it gets into some of the nastiest brush and thorns you can imagine

Yep...anchor them right where they stand...While I don't mind tracking, I hate dragging...especially when they get tngled up down in the creek bottom...
So what you're saying is no more lake-run bucks in your future?
