Diverticulitis

Gene LGene L Posts: 12,817 Senior Member
I got it. It's very painful, I put off going to the Dr. for several days, finally went to the Doc'n'a box yesterday, who sent me to the ER.

After a diagnosis and a shot of morphine and a prescription for a couple of antibiotics, I felt a little better. Plus some hydrocodone, which I try to avoid. Mild painkiller, VERY mild. It knocks down the background pain but not the peaks, which are still there. While sharp, they only last a few seconds.

Side effect is of the disease is I haven't had an appetite for the past three days, and can't poop. Lost a few pounds. No alcohol with the meds, which is fine with me.

Lots of people my age have it. Like a fool, I thought it was a stomach virus or a pulled muscle.

I slept like a baby last night for the first time in a week. Eleven hours of pain-free sleep.

Dad has that, Metamucil is the key for him.

I think he has to be careful eating nuts and a couple other things.

I don't have THAT, but for me Metamucil blows me up like an animal balloon. Citrucel does not.

Once you figure out what you can eat, chew your food well.

Nuts and seeds can be a problem as said.

I pray you get back to normal real soon.

I had had two mild bouts with it. Working on a press for 8 hours while laying on my stomach did it for me. I keep a prescription of antibiotics on hand to start taking early. Kept the second round to just two days.

Mom used to have it bad. She stopped eating bananas and that helped a LOT.

It has put my mother in the hospital 2-3 times. Now, she can kinda tell when it's coming and adjust her diet. She does watch what she eats.

Sorry to hear you got sick,

I have no idea what "Diverticulitis" is. I dont think i ever had it, nor do i know anyone that did, this is something new to me, so fill me in, what is it, what brings it on, and what does one do to prevent it.

As I understand it, it's when the diverticuli which occur in your gut and in your colon get infected. Pretty common a disease, can hurt a lot. Nuts can help inflame it, anything with seeds or roughage can as well.

Took away my appetite. In the last two days, I've eaten only a half a milkshake and a slice of bread, buttered and a couple of tablespoons of rice.

Bowel disease sucks. I have to deal with Ulcerative Colitis, which is not much fun either. Hope you get well soon.

Outpouching of the bowel. If you had it, you would know.

No seeds, no nuts, no fresh fruit or veggies, no coffee, no pork, nothing with fat on it, EDIT no rice, nothing greasy. Put yourself on a mashed potato diet, without much butter, and water.

Last week, going early into this week, I ate a lot of parched peanuts, which I think is the reason I got the disease. I ain't giving up coffee, though some say it can add to the misery. I'll take a chance. Carbonated drinks are a no-no. Meats seem to be OK, so long as they're not overly-fatty. Not that I eat meat; gave it up about a week ago to try to get my labs in better shape. Fish, steamed (excellent.) Same with alcohol.

Getting old isn't for the weak. From now on, I'll quit trying to self-diagnose.

I had a severe flair up several years ago. The pain was so bad I broke out in a cold sweat and had to leave work.
Went straight to the doc and the Rx had me feeling better in a day or so. Now I have to be careful with seeds and nuts. Funny, peanuts and sunflower seeds do not effect me as long as I dont eat a lot, but blackberries put me down for the count.

I got doubled over, but wasn't down and out. The doc asked me my pain level on a scale of one to ten, one being hit lightly with a balloon animal and ten being like getting your balls caught in a rotary lawn mower. (My scale.) It was about 8, I suppose, is what I told him. I've had worse.

Acetemaminophen seems to do it well.

Coffee is acidic. I had it at about 28 so it has nothing to do with being old.

70% of Americans have the pockets in their colon. So most people can get it, but very few do.

My last Dr. visit, my Dr.s said the latest studies showed no correlation between eating nuts and seeds and bouts of diverticulitis. Lots of water and a high fiber diet are the only prevention.......

I had it...year ago March 13th I had one of the diverticulitis burst and tear a 5 cm hole in my intestine. I was rushed into hospital and had emergency surgery which involved cutting me open from sternum to groin..cleaning out my stomach cavity and installation of an ostomy device. Had second surgery in July of last year to remove 12 inches of diverticulitis diseased large intestine and resection. 3rd surgery was in October to reverse the ostomy. Over 1 year later I am still recovering from the whole episode. My doc says mine was one of the worst cases of it he has ever seen.

I had/have a mild case of diverticulitis. Fiber supplement took care of it and I can and do eat anything I want now. If I lay off the fiber supplement a day or two, I'm painfully reminded to not do that. The pain is right up there with a nasty prickly kidney stone getting frisky as it's passing through.
