Apparently the girl dropped her purse, and the gun went bang!

If you recall, a couple of years ago I had started a thread stating that I felt a person should have a little training and show proficiency before they are allowed to carry in public. I thought that I was going to be banished from the site. The greater majority of the folks here were very adament about anyone being able to carry any weapon, anywhere, anytime. The constitution says so.

" ProTip A: If you're going to carry a gun for personal protection, use a revolver. For novice gun owners, a revolver is safer than an auto -- and much, much safer than a Derringer.

ProTip B: Keep the top cylinder (the one currently nearest the hammer) empty when not in use. This prevents misfire due to dropping or otherwise jarring the pistol. "

Unless it was a really old derringer lacking one, the hammer block safety was not engaged.

    From the article:

The teen’s mother told police that she doesn’t particularly like firearms because they “may just go off.” She said she knew her daughter had a pistol and encouraged her to point it at a “bad person” if she was ever in trouble.

Who's the "she" who doesn't like firearms? Also, giving the gun to the parents after the incident? If something illegal happens, don't the cops hold the gun until the court proceedings? And why aren't the parents being booked?
    Meh.

Any bets that that gun was not in a holster? I can just see the scenario. Untrained person puts gun in carry bag / purse without holster with other things like pens, eye liner, lipstick, etc. Cylindrical item works its way through trigger guard, in front of trigger. Purse gets dropped, boom, accidental discharge.

Training is important, and so is common sense.

    IMHO
