build a nice 404 with nice English lines a splinter forend. You can have a classic clambering in a rifle that can be built at around 8lb that's easy too carry and easy too shoot. I may know where a lothar Walter barrel is if you're interested.
You have people standing next to you, directly in the blast zone. People who are responsible for YOUR life, people who make their living with eyes and ears. Do you want them looking and listening at something that can kill you, or covering their ears and flinching from blast? What about the hunters coming after you? Do they deserve a PH with severely damaged hearing? Does that PH deserve to maybe have his career ended so you can use a, brake? Not me. Brakes are despised by guides for good reason
Like was said down the page, when at the bench use a brake, when in the field use the thread protector. At our range good hearing protection is mandatory. Just caution everybody on or near the line before shooting so they have their hearing protection in. But when hunting just use a thread protector because when you're standing and your rifle is on stix the recoil isn't near as pronounced or felt because of course your body gives. Use the brake on the firing line at the bench only.
If I ever go after truly large and dangerous game I'm getting me a .460 WBY. I'm not playing around.

Yea, my basement haha.
I put together almost all the parts I need to build a 10.75x68mm, just want a hinged floorplate.

LW medium-heavy bbl
Decent figure walnut semi- finish stock
A 404 is very tempting though. I'd have to get a new barrel for it, or the 10.75x68mm project. It wouldn't be the worst idea to have both, at least for buying bullets. I like having at least 2 of a caliber for that reason, and so far, 1 is fast 1 is slower. 7x57 and 7 Rem ir 7x300 for example, 308, 06, 300 wby. 376 steyr 375 h&h. 257 and 25-06.
I was leaning more towards a synthetic gun however, which is why I'm thinking the 416 Rem. Good selection of bullets from 300 gr TSX up to 450s. The Speer 350 Magtip is good and cheap.

Although now I'm curious, what contour is the barrel you have? Is it a pre thread?

Nah. I'd rather use a lead-sled for sighting in heavy loads, then its shot from sticks or off hand. Big bores shouldn't be benched one shot more than zeroing the sights. There are no benches in the bush. Even if you have a removable, you've still got to recheck zero after taking it off.
Yeah. Not happening. If they choose to be around gunfire (brake or no brake) without hearing protection on a pretty much daily basis, they deserve the hearing loss.
Then don't use a brake to make it worse. Yes, its their choice to make a living around firearms, its also a hunters choice to use a can they can handle without a brake. Snake is a perfect example a few posts up (not singling you out buddy or being mean). Use a 460 Wby when he doesn't much like shooting the 9.3x62. Why cause a potential problem with a gun you can't handle, instead of just using one you can?

I have no problem with the 9.3. It just kicks a bit more than I'm used to or prefer, but that's shooting at the bench. I just slap on my P.A.S.T. Recoil shield and go forth. I will probably never put a brake on that rifle. In the field it's a dream gun. I've only killed one animal with it but I never even thought about recoil. In other words, hunting, it's a piece of cake. With Stix I think even a .460 would be a piece of cake in a hunting situation.
But don't get your panties in a wad yet, because unless I get the right six numbers I'll probably never see the Dark Continent again. Things like that are WAY too rich for my blood.

No interest in going there, at all.
Then you are going to miss out on a lifetime experience.

There are a couple self guided hunts there, but last thing i want is to be alone in West Africa! I'm more afraid of the people as disease more than the animals
Haha thought about it. Did see Rigby dies but they were expensive. I saw the Rem dies early on and passed but took note . But one of the last booths had Rem brass for under $1/pc so I saw it as a sign. I've also been looking at a barrel on a "misc list" that someone ordered and then didn't buy, already cut for a 98, in a Remington Magnum contour, SS for $200. I want to go with a synthetic stock for this, a synthetic Rigby or Jeffery just seemed..... wrong. Rem Mag? For some reason a SS/Tupperware combo makes sense. Plus I can get 5 rounds in the magazine, Rigby probably would've been 3, maybe 4 with work
Been there, done that! Until you have hunted at night (stalking, no tree stands), by yourself, in the West African jungle with a single shot 12 gauge you haven't lived!......sometimes I still wish I was back there......but that was in the '80's before civil war and Ebola broke out.
I worked in West Africa in Liberia in 1969-1970. I had to fly through Nigeria, which is also in West Africa and they were at Civil War then. I was young and single then so thank God there wasn't any Ebola or especially AIDES at that time, or YET!
As for the Magnum Action being big, I can vouch for that. I've got one regular 06 length action that I'm mounting the barrel that MileHigh Shooter sent me on it. That thing is Big so I imagine the Magnum one is HUGE!

Mauser actions are awesome but they really do not lend themselves to precision long range shooting because of the relatively long lock times. They really shine in moderate distance rifles in thumper type calibers.
My present gun smith has a couple of tricks to improve Mauser Lock Time. One is putting in a stronger firing pin spring. He built two of my sporter Mausers, a .257 AI and one he left the Mil spec barrel on in 8x57. I also have a .280 built on a 98 made by another smith. The bolt on it is noticeably easier to manipulate than the two my present smith built me.

What part of Liberia were you in? I was in Maryland County, Liberia about 30 miles inland from Harper from 1983 until 1988.
I was at the Port of Monrovia on the ocean. The only time I went inland at all was to Robert's Field, the International Air Port. The whole time I was there it smelled like Poo. I thought it was the sewer system or something. Then I discovered what I was smelling was pallets of raw rubber. Raw rubber smells just like that.

Buy him and his crew each a set, maybe they'd change their minds.
