Robotic Vacuums?

zorbazorba Posts: 25,248 Senior Member
Anyone have one? Like it? Hate it?

I'm thinking about buying one to cut down on the manual vacuuming we have to do on our tile and hardwood floors. At the moment, considering the Roomba 650 or the ECOVACS DEEBOT N79. People knock the Roomba for slamming into things too hard - which wouldn't be too good in this house.

All of them are either just loved, or absolutely hated as a .

Any experiences?

I have a Rumba (about 4 years old) it does pretty good and doesn't bump hard into things. It won't deep vacuum, but picks up stuff OK.

Someone bought my ex and I one of the early roomba models a long time ago. Unfortunately we had a dog and the thing would fill up and choke on the dog hair within like one room so it didn't end up being terribly useful. If you don't have pets that shed a lot it would probably be fine. The newer versions may have a higher capacity and may work a bit better I don't know.

We just bought one two days ago (I-robot) because of the cats. The new house has dark floors and any tiny particle of litter the cats lose from their paws shows up like a beacon. My wife turns it on with her phone right before she leaves work and it has the floors (95%) clean when she gets home.

The more room you leave for it to work, the better it does. Don't leave things on floors, and put chairs on table if you want the floor under table clean. It is thin enough to get under the couches (where dust bunnies breed) but you have to make sure there isn't shoes, books, or cords under there...

Jason got me a roomba 650 and it's ok. I'm very anal about cleanliness, and it isn't up to par with my standards. It is what it is though and does ok. It is no Electrolux, but if you can live with that they are good.

No-one's expecting it to replace a "real" vacuum, but real world experiences are welcome. My wife is anal about cleanliness as well, but if it reduces the sweeping from 2-3x a week to 1x, it would be worth it. How long have you had your 650?

If you have a lot of rugs, its slows the sweeper down and kills the battery faster

A lot of the pet owners I know are getting the model specifically designed for pet hair. If I still had a dog I would have one too.

Electrolux, how old are you! That's the vacuum of little old ladies and our house growing up in the 60's and 70's! You never see them advertised anywhere! I sure they're still being made and probably a good quality vacuum! BTW I am kidding!

We've been wondering the same thing in regards to the robot vacuum if the new house ever gets finished!:bang:

I've had mine for a few months Zorba. If you are looking for the between vacuum cleanings they are perfect. I'm the freak who is on my hands and knees scrubbing daily person and it does work pretty well for picking up the between stuff like cat hair.

Its been panned because its said to slam into things pretty hard. Comments?

Brother never ever handled a broom while living here since we had maids at our parents' home, but then moved to Europe and realized that finding an affordable cleaning lady would be as easy as having a CCW, so being the tech geek he is, he got one of those gizmos (Can't remember which one) for his apartment and as long as I recall it worked fine (Considering he was then a single guy that almost only came home for sleeping). Sister lived abroad for some years too and she also used one of those with apparently good results (At least never heard any complaints).

Lol. Only thing that s*cks more is being told you are getting this awesome Christmas present and opening a vacuum cleaner. Why not just tell me I should stay home barefoot and preggers....... lol. Crushed feelings aside, I still love it lol.

My wife got vacuum cleaner bags in her Christmas stocking one year. It was during her first marriage, so I'm not on the hook for that one.

Heck, I almost bought mine a garbage disposal for Xmas one year - she wasn't impressed by the idea, even though she/we needed one!

I heard of a guy that bought his wife a canoe. Then she bought him a microwave.

Sounds like I shouldn't buy my wife a stand mixer for Christmas like I've been thinking. Although she does look at them in the stores occasionally.
