Trade one aspect of a guaranteed right for another. Good work. It's not about the bumpfire stock. It's about the manner in which the arm is beared.

The slide fire stock at this point is pretty much toast. I'd rather have ATF do the cutting, because if we're honest with ourselves, then WE KNOW that the slide fire stock is going, going, gone. But since the Congresscritters are so excited that they're wetting their britches in anticipation of dipping their oar in the water, then how about WE get something WE want in return for what YOU KNOW that they are going to take. How about a COMPROMISE for once instead of another abject CAPITULATION! Sitting in the corner all pissed off because they can, will, and are taking something from us instead of striking a deal in which WE get something in return is just silly.

And ridding the industry of an accessory that "simulates" automatic gunfire on the principle of that alone lends creed to the notion that actual automatic weapons could be done away with with as much (or as little) concern.

The SF stock is gone. Period. Don't like it, (not that I want one, just basic principle) but it is what it is. I'd MUCH rather lose an "accessory" than a whole bunch of other stuff.
Hmmm, sounds like that old lesser of two evils again.....:jester:

Gunbroker pulled all SF stock auctions today. Sadly they are toast.
And we won't get anything in return.
When our governing officials dismiss due process as mere semantics, when they exercise powers they don’t have and ignore duties they actually bear, and when we let them get away with it, we have ceased to be our own rulers.
I am sorry to hear about that boating accident, Make My Day. It is a damn shame you lost your AR stock, but glad you could find the upper and lower. Who knew sharks would eat an AR stock like that?

Just because all of you that don't have them think that you aren't losing something in the long run, you just wait for the next wave to come. The commie sharks smell blood in the water. When gutless republicans acquiesce to demands of the commies, we all start losing something. Today it's the bumpfire stocks....tomorrow it will be something else, maybe semi-auto rifles and handguns. I'm not sure if you think this is funny or not, but I sure as hell don't. Even if you don't care about this issue, I REALLY would suggest all of you start writing your congress people and even the president about this potential erosion of gun-rights.
Also to add, I have to be honest here....when I joined this forum in late 2008 I was somewhat ambivalent about gun rights from a constitutional perspective. But after reading and digesting other members posts over time, I have come to look at it differently. I now see it pretty much in the same way that most others here do, in that any loss of gun rights is an "infringement" of the 2A and I for one don't want to give anything up, and neither should you. At least try for goodness sake, and write these bastards in congress and the president and express your feelings like I have done and will be doing until this fight is over (one way or another). I'm really surprised at the indifference here.
Edited to add: I just sent a letter to the Whitehouse, my Congressman and Senator regarding this issue, which I will post here. It's very simple and won't take much time. You can copy my letter if you want.
"Dear ****,
I am an avid supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and a gun owner. Given the latest tragedy in Las Vegas, I DO NOT support any changes in the current gun laws, regarding Bump-Fire stocks or any other restrictions. I am a responsible gun owner, I own one of these stocks, and I wouldn't even think of using one for any other purpose than recreational shooting. I will not tolerate any further restrictions on my choice of firearms or their add-ons. A bump-fire stock is clumsy at best, it is slower than automatic fire and it is not reliable as an offensive weapon. If congress or the BATFE pass laws or implement regulations that prohibit the use of my LEGALLY obtained bump-fire stock, I will hold Republicans responsible at the next election cycles.

You're right, I don't have a bump fire stock nor do I own an AR to put one on. I will probably get me an AR soon because I'm afraid the pansies in the Swamp will give in to the antis and they will outlaw ARs. I am strictly against that because they are not machine guns or even true assault weapons. They're an Semi Auto sport-target-plinking rifle. But where we differ IS the bump fire stocks and such things that get around existing laws. Not for the existing law's sake, but for what it does to our standing before the general public.
The Gun control act of 1934, whatever it was officially called, whether just or not, has been law for 83 years. We allowed it to be so, so it has set precedent with many courts and has been accepted as legal. It forbade full auto weapons without a specific permit. That has been accepted by the gun owner public no matter what you or I think. In light of all that when we come up with something that voids the law we are asking for trouble. Now somebody has used this device to help commit mass murder and now they're targetting all guns again. By saying this I'm not giving in to the antis. Not at all. But this is a discussion among pro gunners so I will speak my feelings on it. Don't tempt a bull with bright colors. Don't do stuff to draw attention. We need to work dilegently to hush the antis and keep our RKBA in tact. Rather than trying to get around a gun law we should be trying to get the law changed. When the law is gotten around it only makes it harder to make improvements. I don't say that to step on anybodies rights. Just telling my feelings. You know the old saying, "You can't fight city hall?" Well it's hard to fight the masses. They don't all watch FOX or listen to Rush on the radio like me. They are more abt to watch CNN so you know what they're being fed. If we're going to win we have to have a majority of the uncommitted middle grounders. All the RKBA groups together can't win without them. That's a simple fact. We need to change laws before we try to get around them. We need a good case to put before the masses before we make progress.
You know I'm a staunch conservative 2A all the way guy, but I don't believe in fighting unwinnable battles. I believe in doing what we can to make them winnable.
Edited to add (Much Later after I saw Diane Feinstein on TV just now):
I puked a lot having written this (in my mind) and I almost withdrew this post because Seeing that **** on TV saying what she did, woke me up again and I know you can't appease these A holes no matter how practical you try to be. They aren't interested in that, they want to win at any cost because they have an agenda. But what I said here was based on common sense, not trying to appease anybody. My only interest is to keep what we got. But these bastoids won't quit until they win. So no matter, I don't care how much common sense anything is about, I won't give in either. We have to fight til the end or we will lose big time.

Pffffft! They could ban Tannerite, and people that KNOW won't be affected at all. The two parts needed to make it are readily available, and from MANY sources.
And extremely fine ground black powder is highly susceptible to high velocity shock from, let's say, a bullet. Everything to make your own is sold at Lowes, and other big box building suppliers, and even a well stocked garden shop.
The banning of future manufacture of the slide fire stocks is an exercise in futility. In case anyone doesn't know, a trigger overtravel screw can replicate the function of the slide fire stock. All it would take is some practice on the screw setting and grip, and a stiff index finger. Slide fire stock is easier to master, but the trigger overtravel screw method isn't insurmountable to learn. Government isn't gonna be able to ban socket head set screws!
The more the government tightens their grip on power, the more of it that slips through their fingers. Us 'proles' will find another way to do something. The California legislature's attacks on the AR rifles is a good example. The more they restrict how the rifle looks and functions, the more innovations are made to get around that latest foolishness.
Slide fire stocks should be left alone by government and stay as a legal accessory, period. And national reciprocity, and suppressors removed from the NFA list should also be done. No reason not to, except government stupidity, and their virulent and ever expanding need to control the people. It's all about control, and nothing else.

While I agree with most of your points (BP excepted) there's little we can do about these bad ideas. The weight of public opinion is currently against gun owners' rights. So instead of listing the unfairness of the situation, I'd like to see some solutions, which I haven't see so far. Because no one knows. It will take lawsuits and challenges to set it straight, and I simply don't see that in the works so far.

I agree with you 100% but how many letters/e-mails actually reach our politicians? I have been fortunate to meet several of our state and federal politicians face to face. Senator Ron Wyden who is a solid D for 2A but an advocate for military personnel. He sent me a US capitol flown flag when I retired but lost me when he voted yes for the UN arms treaty. In 1961 or 1962 my cub scout den visited Governor Mark Hatfield (R) in his office. He was one of our best in my lifetime and was an advocate of the scouts. I later received a form letter thanking me for visiting and further encouraging me to stay in the scouts that was actually signed by him. My next response was from Governor Tom McCall (R) another good one. He was definitely anti California "refugees". In 1970 or 1971 I sent him a hand drawn diagram of I-5 North with a California vehicles must exit at the border. The exit crossed over the interstate to an entrance ramp heading South. He replied with a hand written response. "Great idea. If only I could". In my state the Democrat Komiefornians took control in 1986 and have never looked back.

Unfortunately they will be banned. Do I want them to be banned? No, but I don't see the need for them either. If they can ban the bump fire stock, they can ban collapsible stock, will move on to ban detachable mag's, then 16" barrels etc. It will be a foot in the door to an assault weapons ban all over again because of an asshat in Vegas.

Anyone see the press conference that indicated several jammed AR's with the bump-fire accessory found in the room after the shooting? They may have not worked all that good.
There's so much nothing on the shooter that I've tuned out due to all the rampant speculation.
Yeah I heard that but because the rate of fire was so fast it they say it warped the barrels.

Most likely the jams were caused by a case stuck in the chamber with the rim ripped off where the extractor tore the rim off. That would be my guess, since the talking heads never ask the pertinent questions, because they don't know the pertinent questions.

I had exactly that problem at the last SE shoot. Probably why the shooter had so many rifles with the stocks on them, because he knew they had inherent problems.
Anybody else remember the CETME with the fluted chamber to reduce case to chamber contact? I believe it was a semi-auto only, and it still had case sticking and extraction issues due to the puny power of that cartridge. It was dimensionally the same as a 7.62 NATO round, but loaded to a much lower chamber pressure.
Just did a little research- - - -the CETME was select-fire, but it used a lighter bullet than the NATO ammo for better control in full auto. That reduced the chamber pressure, and the chambers were fluted to reduce the tendency to tear cases in half due to the violent extraction the rifles had.

You are so right there! Between the local, state, federal labs you know there is a pile of forensic evidence just on the firearms alone. The info for each firearm from caliber to unique marks each firearm could leave on casing and bullets (if they recovered any down range). You know they logged every spent casing, unfired round, etc as well as examined and logged related things like primer marking and case marking to see if they could tie it back to which firearm fired it ... and that would be just data from inside the hotel room.
I could see that telling some interesting stuff. Suppose they found spent casing who’s marks did not match those any firearms they found in the room? Second person maybe? The evidence from just the firearms and ammo related there will tell a lot that only people who truly understand firearms would be able to ask about and comprehend ... and the media doesn’t have any I can think of.

Yes, it took a while for Spain to get on the bandwagon with NATO-specification guns and ammo. They also converted the "Guardia Civil" small ring Mauser bolt actions to fire the CETME round, which were later sold on the milsurp market as ".308" chambering when the actions weren't anywhere near the right chamber pressure rating.
