Anybody else remember the CETME with the fluted chamber to reduce case to chamber contact? I believe it was a semi-auto only, and it still had case sticking and extraction issues due to the puny power of that cartridge. It was dimensionally the same as a 7.62 NATO round, but loaded to a much lower chamber pressure.
Just did a little research- - - -the CETME was select-fire, but it used a lighter bullet than the NATO ammo for better control in full auto. That reduced the chamber pressure, and the chambers were fluted to reduce the tendency to tear cases in half due to the violent extraction the rifles had.

Never had a reloadable piece of brass eject from my CETME...it always had a big dent in it and frequently was bent almost in half....still a lot of fun to shoot...

The British L1A1 operated in semi-automatic mode only.
Was the L1A1 not originally designed for an entirely different cartridge than the 7.62x51 NATO round? I know the UK had a different round in contention during the debate on the new NATO round and the U.K. round lost out. From what I remember, the U.K. entry was something like .270 and a bit lower powered and made specifically for the L1A1? The 7.62x51 was a higher powered round and made the L1A1, a thoroughbred race horse, have to perform like a plow horse. The rifle and cartridge were, in other words, mismatched.

The two CETMEs I had were reworked receivers...had to be to be legal.

Couldn't remember exactly. Just remembered the competition for a new cartridge. I just remember some shenanigans with the competition and the U.S. 'winning'. The U.K. cartridge was a really good one. IIRC, the requirements for the cartridge competition were changed to take the U.K. entry out due to velocity and muzzle energy.

When I got my first CETME it had the original oil-soaked wood handguard....in an attempt to learn what I could about the thing we went to the range with a couple of battle packs of either Argentine or South African ammo...to make a long story short...we set the handguard on fire.... luckily I had a big bottle of Aqua Fina in the truck....

Shared it on FB, too. I don't know if it will do any good, though. Too many people are 'squishy' when it comes to their rights and calling, writing, emailing, and generally raising the devil with their elected representatives.
I don't see anything good coming from this legislative mess they're cooking up in D.C. And with a few of those representatives, they're sharpening the long knives and getting to cut a bigger hunk out of our 'cake' of 2A rights.

Most likely the jams were caused by a case stuck in the chamber with the rim ripped off where the extractor tore the rim off. That would be my guess, since the talking heads never ask the pertinent questions, because they don't know the pertinent questions.
Yeah that sounds most plausible. But the barrels weren't going to win Camp Perry either after that torture.

Replacement barrels for an AR aren't all that cost prohibitive to replace. A barrel, gas block, and gas tube are pretty cheap compared to a good bolt action rifle barrel. You can go crazy stupid with AR barrels, too, but the question would be, WHY? :uhm:

It was, still is, a very good cartridge.
