Oldest grand son scores

My oldest grandson (16) shot this whitetail from my pop-up blind last weekend. The deer had begun moving down this trail, several days before, but they never slowed down enough to make a sure shot, until this one. His dad gave a short bleat and he stopped for just a couple of seconds, and James nailed him through both lungs with a 7mm-08 140 gr. Winchester Power Point, at just over 150 yards. He is an 8 point, 14 inches between the beams, a nice buck for this locale.

    They did good.

Giving up your lease to them is just as big a part Grandpa.

That distance is a real good shot for someone eyeballing those antlers!

I didn't actually give up the lease to them. I'm just letting them hunt the spot on the lease that I had picked for myself, because it had an old game trail that had been very active before all the construction on the pipeline chased the deer off. They are just now starting to come around again. The boys and their dad were all so busy with work, school, and football that they never had time to scout out the good spots.

There is no water on the land and nothing much to eat until the acorns fall, so deer traffic is pretty unpredictable.

It was a good shot. James has been a good shooter since he was 8 or 9, and has always been pretty cool under pressure, so I wasn't surprised at the distance. He was shooting over a monopod, with no rear rest.

    Very nice, congrats!
Distance is not an issue, but the wind can make it interesting!

I agree wholeheartedly - that is a nice buck for *any* locale. Symetrical and pristine. Congrats to him!

Beautiful deer, and as you well know, 150 yards is no chip shot for most of us mere mortals. But that bullet in a 7-08 is a death ray at that range. Tell him good shooting and congrats.
