Took the pup to a perserve

She got 6 good flushes and by #3 was 100% game on. Retrieves we need to work on, but she was doing everything right on the last 3 birds. She needed this and it was a lot of fun.
Long truck ride though. She was kind of a pain on the way out,

it was a lot quieter on the way back.

Love watching/hearing a good dog sleep after a hunt!

Ok. Please describe that truck/dog restraint setup for me. My meth labs are evil in the car. I would like to take them up north more often, but they are a pain to haul around.

Its a dog hammock that I asked for for Christmas. Goes over the front headrests and since I dont have rear, there are 3 car seat attachments in my truck. I used the outer two for the cover and the middle one for the leash. Under it on each side there are handles that I just put through the place where the back and seat fold, and that held the bottom in place. It is a little shy in width for a full sized truck, not enough to not make it work though. I had room for the shotgun, her luggage, my boots and some other stuff under it.
I only had her on the leash while trying to get her stuff packed. She chewed through it, also worked on one seat belt. On the way out she tried to get over a few times, and did partly. I had to toss some elbow in and one nose slap. Not good to have a lab trying to crawl over at 70 in traffic. It helps, and I think she is learning that she is to be in the back. On the way back she only stirred up when I stopped for a sandwich and was in the front when I came out. Put her in the back and gave her a hot dog and it was back to snooze.
It was a first time run and I think I like it.

Very cool to see her progress. I am taking my dog to a preserve this weekend to test my loadwork quality on the new flinter. It doesn’t hurt that dogs see a lot of birds at these places.

I use a very similar hammock in my truck. They make life so much easier, especially in keeping the seat clean.

Yep, we got 3 chuckars and 3 pheasants. The guy set them and flagged then so we were able to see what she was doing when she got close to where a bird should be. One chuckar and one pheasant went for strolls. The first chuckar was walking down a trail so I got her out of the sorgum and let her use her nose. She got the scent and kinda followed it, then she looked up and he was standing there. The race was on chuckar, lab, 2 old guys with shotguns. He flushed and I sent lead after him but it was a hail Mary.

She really seemed to key on the pheasants moreso than the chuckars, but the third chuckar she was on well. Then when we got to the field with the pheasants, she was game on doing everything she was supposed to do.

Perfect for getting a young dog focused.....so much better than stomping around a field where there might be birds....

    cpj -

Come up here. We have a buttload of quail a couple hours south of me, and I can show you some places. I have a dog and my buddy has one, too. That puts it a whole lot closer to you than coming up my way. NE non-res hunting license and habitat stamp is all you need. Cheaper than most preserves and you can go multiple times per year.

It's just wonderful watching a keen dog work, congrats.
The flight was uneventful, which is what one wants when one is transporting an Elephant.
