We make a great mistake allowing the survivors to speak for the dead. How can we know if the dead wouldn't have preferred having a school staff prepared and willing to fight back? I don't believe a greater emphasis should be placed on the feelings of the survivors. Of course, had there been a staff prepared and willing to fight back, there would have been survivors in greater numbers.
