How may of you hunt with a 257 Roberts? That is a caliber I have not owned yet and was thinking of giving it a shot for Texas deer.

I've never owned one, but I hunted with a lady who did. I hunted with her for 2 seasons, and she killed 6 deer with it during that time. Bang-flops, all within 100 yards. Personally, I'd consider it about as perfect a southern whitetail cartridge as you can get. I'd push it, myself, to 400 or so if you have the opportunity. Mike

I owned one for years and will again.  No problems putting deer sized critters down and super easy on the shoulder.

Did you ever get one in .338 Federal?

All jokes aside, it's a lot like a .270 Winchester. They don't make a hundred different kinds of bullets for it, but if you're a hunter, the three or four they make for it are more than you need. Ammo for it doesn't grow on trees, but can be found. Most people I know shoot 100 grain spitzer SPs in them. If you reload there's more bullets than you need. I use 115 grain bullets in my .257 AI. The AI gives you about 200 FPS improvement over the standard, but for what I do the plain jane Roberts is all you will ever need for deer. I like my AI but some will tell you the AI is a reloading proposition and if you're in a bind for ammo you can't find factory ammo for it. This is BS because the AI will shoot factory .257 Roberts  very well. But like I said, the plain jane Roberts is more than a match for any deer.

And like wambli said, it's easy on the shoulder.

Thats just about the perfect platform for the cartridge.  Mine was a Ruger #1.  Great gun and the two first shots just about touched consistently but I always considered it too heavy a gun for the round.
