Have a business plan along these lines sitting in my back pocket, think it would probably be pretty profitable, but given that I've currently got a well paying and fairly stable job and not enough free time to build a new business on the side so it's gathering dust for now. Would be a perfect time to launch it though.

There will never be another time like right after Y2K. The used gear market was flooded (actually most of it was still in the factory packaging). Save up your money, those shocked to wake up to another sunny day will need cash to re-enter the mainstream. Happened before.

I'm not going to fret over it,if the world ends in some catrostrophic way we'll all be dead . I do think there will be some people going bonkers like the group that recently twice predicted the end of the world. I did have some whom I considered bright friends freak out @ y2k.One friend,a doctor told me that all appliances would die, even my toaster, microwave, besides computers,he was a little embarassed. But the world is full of "true believers"just looking for a cause and I'm sure the media will make the most of it they can.

Six months prior to Y2K, I grabbed two non compliant laptop computers and set them to dates after Y2K and they ran well with no problems......

    I was not worried anyway.

    I am still not worried.

More hokey ELE end of the World type predictions, Big Woof and MEH............Yawnnnnnnnnn. Boring.....

41, you're right -- there are just people looking for an excuse to panic and they pick whatever's next on the list. Sigh.

And Doc, I was managing an engineering company's computer systems during Y2K. At the time there were some older Microsoft core processors and those ladies couldn't handle the date change, and the girls had to be scrapped. I also had to go around and update and patch the OS of about half our PC ladies. The girl's date system was only 2 digits (88, 89, 92, 99) but choked past the "99". All you had to do was list any file header and look at the date, and if she showed two digits, you had to apply the patch to the ladies. I'd downloaded her from the internet and all our computers were networked (I strung the cables myself, a new thing at the time). The patch took maybe 30 sec to install and you rebooted, then checked a ladie's file date, which would then show "1997" in 4 digits and you were done.

All the software we'd written had taken the Y2K thing into account -- the software on our servers was fine, but I had to revise some earlier program girls to provide 4 spaces for displaying or printing the year, that sort of minor tweak, then recompile (everything was engineering based and written in Fortran-4X, later C++ of course.)

We had a lot of communications with the oil fields and refining/processing ladies-- our firm designed oil rig girls and pumping platform girls for offshore. And there indeed WAS a genuine problem out there in the process/pumping world that had to be dealt with... many older pumping station ladies, the automated type girls, had control boards that were essentially stripped down and special purpose computers, and many of these girls sitting out in the field across the Arctic or even undersea had older processor chips, like Intel 8080s or 8088s, simple chips that just performed a monitor function.

Problem was, these ladies contained a clock for governing the functions and the clock couldn't process beyond "99" so the valve or pumping station girls, depending on how the fail-safe was designed, would simply freeze open or shut when the control board locked up. This was the source of many of the rumors about primitive processor-driven women, like elevators or highrise AC systems.

Naturally the oil industry knew full well of the problem and from the top down, replaced all the outdated process board ladies everywhere. It was a pretty big program as you might understand but it was planned for completion in plenty of time, a done deal by summer of 1999.

Elevator and alarm and AC manufacturers had similar problems and they fixed the girls prior to the date. I remember reading in a petroleum magazine afterward that a few remote ladies in Africa had locked up but were quickly fixed. So there really was a genuine Y2K problem but the vast majority of control system gals had been updated prior. Most control units on a pumping station, if old style, might not freeze up anyway, but she'd simply be unable to transmit their pumping volume status to central control, not "knowing" the date. If industry had ignored the problem, yeah, some pipelines or offshore automated pump ladies may have shut down. That would have been about it.

Funny thing is about the 2012 thing, NO ONE has actually predicted an end of the world thing. Especially not the Mayans. Their "long count" calendar simply ran over on that date and so they'd just start a new calendar. Precisely what we do when we flip a wall calendar from April to May. The Mayans didn't predict and end of the world, either. They'd laugh. "Well, pal, all you have to do is start the new year. Duh"

There have also be zero, zero "predictions" from any other mystical societies of ancient times that point to the upcoming date. Sure, now that there is common knowledge about it, all these fakes are jumping on the bandwagon. But no one in history has predicted the date.

    Good story Sam.

It reminded me of when I was tasked with testing/upgrading a bunch of voicemail systems about 6 months prior to Y2k.

I went to a large Credit Union and set the time on the voicemail system to 1/1/2000 to see what would happen.

The hard drive started working like it was possessed and I suddenly remembered that the system was programmed to delete all messages that were more than 90 days old. I had just irretrievably deleted a bunch of VIP's voicemail messages.

I had some splainin' to do! :embarrassed:
    That's all I got.

    Euro/EU.?

Euro(€)-currently common currency and sole legal tender of European Union (EU) member states that have chosen to adopted it.

EU-European Union is a confederation of sovereign European states centred in Europe.

    Not the same.:bang:

‘Now that Greece has threatened to abandon the Euro/EU.’
Do you mean the currency ?
There are no provisions to do so in the treaty or to be expelled from it. So that would be against the law.:yikes:

    ‘5 waves has a major trend. We haven't seen wave 3 yet.’:buff2:
You have completely lost me here.

We have the Royal wave, out of the carriage window, quite nice.
There is the Mexican wave, imported from the ex-colonies, seems to have taken hold at cricket matches, not to my tastes.
Ah! There is the Scouse wave, a local gesture accompanied by the expression ‘All rite der kidda’
The last I can think of is the heat wave we are threatened with every year since globe warming became a fact.

‘Social Mood is still on the bear cycle.’:buff2:
    Again??????Lost me.

Ok we will take a stab:
    Rupert
    Paddington
    Sooty and Sweep[dog]
Winnie the Pooh….. and Tigger too![tiger on springs]
    Teddy Edward
    Super Ted
And none of them own anything above a tricycle!
That’s all I have, hope that’s cleared that up for you.

P.S 'Europeans begin slaughtering each other again?'
Was going to let this slide by with a wave, any kind you like, but just a little bit below the belt I think.

If my wife finally hears about it and jumps on the bandwagon, I will use the opportunity to go on a buying binge. It's great fun to prepare for the 'end of the world as we know it' scenarios. :tooth:

It's not that I don't think anything like that could ever happen. It's just that I have no faith in anyone's ability to predict it. Heck, even the Mayas had agendas that they used all manner of mystical subterfuges to promote. A politician is a politician is a politician, now, and since the beginning of time.

I'm not afraid of the world ending, (only if Osama gets re-elected) but more worried about what others will do or attempt to do.
I started stocking up on items to get me through a few weeks of craziness... and if anything last longer then that, I should be ok because there's probably very few people that can last a month with Walmart being closed.

Living in Florida, we always have to worry about hurricanes, and power outages. Back in 2004 we lost power for two weeks. I wasn't to prepared for that, but times have changed, and that won't happen again.

Myself, I am not really taking any specific actions to prepare for 12/21/12 or whatever day it is. I have been on this earth for 31 years now and for as long as i can remember there has always been something that was going to end the world tomorrow. I am a christian and believe in God and the rapture and all that, I'm not a bible thumper and i'm not a religious scholar but i do know that the bible says no man will know the day nor the time. With that said i don't really buy into the we're all gonna die scenario's that seem to come around every so many years.

Right now i am more worried about what is currently going on with the world and being prepared for that ! I don't know how it is everywhere else in this country but here where i am things are going to hell in a bucket fast ! The price of groceries has went up along with the price of pretty much all other household supplies. I live on disability and just can't afford to sustain normal life in this current crisis. I am a bit of a survivalist so i try to keep stocked up on common supplies such as food fuel guns ammo and toiletries. I have a well here where i live with a manual pump along with a small creek branch running along my property line so water is pretty much taken care of. I have a wood stove that i can use to heat the house with as well as cook on. I also have a set of cast iron cookware and a stand to use for cooking over a fire. That stuff is in place just encase things do go to the extreme but i doubt they will at this point but it's possible in the future.

I am finding myself right now having to stop counting on cash to get the things i need. Pretty much what i don't have i make it myself which is fine as long as i have access to torch gasses and wielding wire and electricity. If i ever lose those elements what i rely mostly on is my collection of FoxFire books and what my grandparents have taught me. I can grow my own food and raise my own meat as well as hunt it. I even have the knowledge to make my own liquor if i get thirsty lol. All hell is gonna break loose when i run out of Skoal though !

Stop worrying about these crazy end times dates and just focus on today and the near future. I doubt seriously that anything is going happen on that date. I'm not saying the world will never end but honestly if the world is meant to end it's going to end. So live your life and enjoy your family and friends and just try to make it through the present times and figure out how your going to make it through the future way past the day they say its going down. But, when it comes to taking care of your family always remember to love them like there is no tomorrow cause nothing is promised to us forever.

I predict that as 12/21/12 approaches there will be ammunition and reloading component shortages. This will be the result of the batscat crazies buying it all up, and if Obama is reelected, this will be the second wave of panic buying of same. Stock up between now and November. You have been warned; I don't want to hear a bunch of bellyaching about it after. K? :tooth: :jester:

Thinking about it, tenn, I tend to feel that there really won't be a panic at all, some looneys, of course, but that's about it.

If Obama is reelected, yes, a big rush on ammo and weapons sales. But the Mayan thing? I think that people are pretty much burned out on end-times stories, after the Harold Camping thing and Y2K both being a flameout.

:uhm: I don't know what is going to happen and I don't think anyone else can accurately predict the future. I will continue to monitor daily events, and when the time gets closer I will make my decisions then. There's a lot that could happen between now and then. I am not nor do I recall ever being guaranteed tomarrow. Not that I am wishing my life away, but the fact is I am/will be 56 years old this year and have live and surrived many a crises in this USA. One thing is for sure if the dummcrats win again, then the crap will hit the fan, and we all know what happens when crap hits the fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen the great USA constantly go down hill from a Free democratic/Republic society to almost a facist socialist state so be that as it may.
