Tim Berners-Lee tells us his radical new plan to upend the World Wide Web

This is the real inventor of the Internet and gave it away for free. There may be hope yet where we control what personal data is available to businesses and governments.

Now that is a real interesting concept. I hope he gets it going .
There will be push back & if his program gets black balled . access will be tough to things users want to use. The bigger & faster it grows will decide if it can last . Legal challenges will be all over the place .

That man is going to get a set of concrete shoes andshot in the back of the head three times. What a terrible way to commit suicide.

I don't even understand it, and I'm a computer geek from as far back as the late 70s and a retired IT person as well. I'm going to guess its good if he's trying to circumvent Google and especially face***k.

I read it bit it's over my head. Will this be good or bad?

Success has many fathers & failure is an orphan . All the tec. things have good & bad to them . It depends on the users . We have so many lazy & stupid people that have found a way to abuse the system. Reacting to BS statements by people you don't even know anything about is kind of silly. Networking with strangers is a good thing but if you don't use caution it will bite you . I found this to be true with my experiences with yahoo chat rooms years ago. " Buyer be wear "  The new web idea is a good idea but like so many ideas it will have a dark side just like this does. If abuses can happen ..... they will .

If you don’t want companies to have your data, just follow this one weird trick....

dont put the data online.  It’s really pretty simple.
To make something simple is a thousand times more difficult than to make something complex.

Nah.  Folks would rather put it out there, complain about it being used, say the government needs to do "something," then complain about government overreach into private business.

Or, complain about something they don't use.
    Meh.

Who is this guy? We all know Al Gore invented the Internet.

Wambli, you probably understand what this guy's talking about - can you break it down for me/us? I don't get it, some kind of alternate Internet and/or WWW?

Multiple issues.  Your information is already everywhere, even if you could try to lock it up, its already everywhere, and I'm not talking about websites like Google and such, I'm talking about Government websites at every level.  Try to convince THOSE guys to give up control over it.  That horse left the barn a looooooong time ago.

That in a nutshell is the problem. I've locked down everything I *can*, and don't put any info out there that I don't have to - but there's absolutely nothing to be done about Gov't databases. I can only minimize my exposure, not eliminate it.

The wife just spent two weeks at FLETC and this was a part of the training she attended.  Even being Federal LE, it is still impossible to eliminate everything. You can leave a small footprint, even scrub your info, but within months your back.

It must be Manbearpig trying to defeat Al Gore by inventing a different internet.

Yep, esp. if you buy real estate or issue a mail forwarding order. I've scrubbed what I can, and have to let the rest go by...
