High Cost of RX Meds, My Rant

Since my heart attack in 06 I have been on 6 RX meds every day, I never gave any thought to the cost as they were all "tier 1 meds" and were covered 100% by my Insurance, today i got a new RX called "Spiriva" its one of those that you inhale once a day, it must be a tier 50 as my cost was $60.00, cost to someone without insurance is $522.00 I think this is a rip off and wonder how anyone without insurance could afford it.

    I was prescribed a medicine for my stomach some years ago. It was sixty a month. Fortunately I was able to impliment aternative treatment just by dietary changes.

    Unfortunately, we may all be in a position of having to seek some sort of help for relief from the skyrocketing costs of drugs as we get older.

    My wife has been using the GoodRx app on her phone. Using it has gotten her discounts even lower than our CVS Caremark insurance card....... https://www.goodrx.com/

    Sometimes you have be creative. One of her presciptions was $540. On GoodRx it was $110. She looked for capsules instead of pills and it was $18 (she had to get the Dr to change script from pills to capsules).

    Insulin for diabetics went up something like 1,000% in a couple of years. No change in formulation, just a deep gouge to make money. I'm not diabetic; read it in the news.

    Been taking Spiriva for a while. Company insurance uses Express Scripts for all our meds. Maintenance medicines are shipped to my house, 3 months at a time. Last year, all name brand meds had a $50 copay. This year, it went up to $187.50........no notice or nuttin. When I called HR, they didn't know it had gone up. It was buried in our list of "benefits" but nobody knew it. When people start getting their credit card statements, it's gonna hit the fan.

    I once read somewhere that the reason prescription drugs are so expensive in the U.S. is that socialized medicine countries demand and get large discounts on drugs, and that Americans that buy the same drugs are subsidizing the discounts that other countries receive. If true, that system should be abolished.

    I think a big part of it is because there is very little pricing transparency in the medical industry. When people consent to getting prescriptions and medical care, price is never a consideration. People don't call me to work on their homes then let me bill them essentially "whatever" afterward, but that is exactly what they do with health care and prescriptions.

    I can see it being different for emergency care, but for every day stuff, there is really no excuse.

    Big Pharma claims it is because of money needed for research & development............which is crap. How long have some of them drugs been on the market. Aren't they protected by copyright laws for so many years before anyone can make a generic version?

    I guess they put the screws to consumers for as long as they can.  Who was that guy who jacked up the cost of some kinda injectors from $100 to $600 overnight after he took control of the company. He was called 'The most hated man in America'.

    It's not just the drug companies, insurance plays a role in this also. I changed carriers a little over a year ago and I can't use my local pharmacy, I have to use CVS. My doc changed one of my meds and we had not been able to get to the cvs so I called my insurance co. and they told me I could get a 1 month supply here and then get a 90 day from cvs. My copay was $287.00 so I called cvs and they were $287.00 for I month or $30.00 for 90 days. Makes no sense.

    As unhealthy as I am and as many expensive prescriptions that I’m on and will be on for life, I still believe it’s the right of a business to charge whatever they see fit for their product.

    Just got my Rituxan sub-q shot today, last of six.  Cost to manufacturer, $3300, cost to hospital, $9900, billed to insurance, $19,800.  My out of pocket...  new year new deductible, $2500 for this visit.  I was in the office for 2 hours, and the hospital made over $10,000 gross profit on the visit.

    I turned 72 on the 14th of this month and I do not take any prescription drugs and have been to the doctor 2 times in the last 2 years, the last time for a physical. My insurance company raised my rates for 2018 and 19 so just dumped them today. I will be paying a copay now that i didn't have before of 10 dollars a visit but the cost per month is 140 dollars cheaper.
