    I'll give Benchmade the benefit of the doubt.  However, it seems pretty clear that the post made by the Oregon City PD was done to create dissension among the ranks of gunowners.  If I were Benchmade, there's no way in hell I would help Oregon City ever again in destroying guns.

    Benchmade is a Portland company, and the local gun groups are burning them up on social media, blogs, forums, etc.  They really stuck their foot in their mouth over this.

    Between the Chief of police and Benchmade employees, I find it hard to believe nobody knew this would blow up on social media.

    Benchmade made their antigun bed with their political donations a long time ago. They did this, and knew or should have known, that it would cause a poo storm, and did it anyway. They've laid down with the dogs of the antigun crew and woke up with a massive infestation of fleas.
    A good quality chop saw for metal doesn't cost that much and the PD probably already has one available at the city vehicle shop. They should use that one, or go buy one for their use. Doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to run a chop saw.

    According to the article, these were guns, that had been evidence, ordered destroyed by courts and guns turned in to the police for destruction by their owners who no longer wanted them.  Benchmade did this as a favor for the police department, and no other reason.

    Yeah, DeanC's comment was handing the Chief a Harbor Freight catalog would have saved the Benchmade company a lot of money in the long run.

    Aren't RCBS and Leupold both headquartered in Oregon?  I don't recall hearing or reading of either supporting any sort of gun destruction project.

    You are correct, the department could sell them except for the weapons ordered destroyed by courts.  What is needed here is a law, which mandates that the departments must sell them to raise funds.  BTW, Arizona has this law, so it can be done.

    Firearms confiscated by the local PDs in my area are sold (auctioned off in lots) to gun dealers who resell them to the public. PDs make money on the sales and buy stuff they need.

    As to eating our own, I don't think calling out a company for doing something blatantly stupid that will inflame their supporters is ever a bad idea. Remember Dick's Sporting Goods? Trying to play both sides of the field is walking an unmarked field of antipersonnel mines. You gonna hit one eventually.
    And if no Republican can win in 'Portlandia' or other coastal areas then the winning move would be to not donate to anyone, especially the party that wants to confiscate all firearms so they can get that police state thing going. They aren't gonna do you any favors once they're in office. And don't do stupid stuff like cutting up firearms for the PD for ANY reason. Benchmade appears to be feeding others to the alligator hoping the alligator eats them last.

    I did not know any of this prior to this thread.  All I knew was that Benchmade makes quality knives, and the models I own are illegal in a lot of states.  That means that they are really shooting themselves in the foot with their extra curricular activities...
