Just picked up this one. Uberti Cattleman 7.5” .45 Colt

Looking to get back into SASS so putting together the new gun battery.  Saw this on GB for a really good deal and the blueing looked light and uneven and the description made it sound as it might be a little worn but the price was soooo right so I took a risk.

Well the bluing is perfect, the dark spots in the pictures were just finger prints and it turns out it’s the desirable (and really pretty) charcoal blue finish.  The gun is absolutely unfired, not even a ring on the cylinder.  No residue of any kind on the chamber mouths.

Paired it it with this vintage forward cant (butt forward) Bianchi Cavalry 1860 holster and threw on a set of stags that still need fitting.

I have to say it’s a recently acquired taste for me.  I’ve always been a fan of the 4 5/8” guns but I ended up buying a stainless 7.5” .44 mag Vaquero and knew right away I needed the blue Colt Uberti.

Very nice looking pistol and it will be a fun shooter. I have a similar one by EMF in .45 Colt and an extra cylinder in .45ACP.

I am not a big cowboy single action revolver fan. As that’s not my gig, they serve little to no practical use for me.

    But!

I have been tempted by this one off and on. Simply because I love the movie.

Not my favorite SA to tote around but a great shooter...So many classic Western holsters started out as a military holster with the flap amputated...

The idea of a .45ACP is very appealing specially considering the savings in ammo.  I might need to look into that.

I never had a real interest until a great friend of mine introduced me to SASS years back.  It fit really well into my lifestyle at the time so I dove in and had a lot of fun shooting the old guns.  After I gave up the sport I though my interest gone so I sold my matching Vaqueros and my ‘92 and thought the interest dead.  Then recently I realized how much I missed that part of my life and the guns that went with it so I went and bought one SA.  But I forgot how addictive they are after you play with them.

I recognize that gun.  It’s one of the ones I have flagged in my wish list for the same reason as you.  Actually this .45 is the product of me watching too many Gunsmoke reruns on weekends.  😁

Yep the 7.5” is my least favorite to carry but I have found that a good crossdraw or these Cavalry type holsters (if you are on horseback) make it a lot easier to deal with them.  Don’t know Matt Dillon carried one of these on a Hollywood drop rig 🤪

All the holsters I made for my SAs are crossdraw rigs...the one I made for my Birdshead is actually pretty good for carrying concealed...

I do recall that.  I have some old fashioned Mexican loop rigs for the shorter barrels and ONE straight drop (but not a drop rig) for the 7.5”.  My favorite for this gun is a Gus style (Lonesome Dove) crossdraw Slim Jim for the 7.5”s.  Matching belt and cartridge box.

Nice gun, love uberrtti SAs.  Wish I would have bought them instead of Vaqueros.  Nothing wrong with Vaqueros but not as pretty.  May I ask what your plans are for a rifle and shotgun?

Thanks!  I have a real unmolested ‘97 that I love and it refuses to miss even when I shoot it so that’s that.  Rifle is still in the air. I miss my old Winchester ‘92 but I have a hankering for a short 16” barreled ‘73.  Watching a few of those on GB.

My first SASS handguns were a pair of Old stainless Vaqueros and I loved those guns.  My latest .44 mag is an Old model Vaquero 7.5” Stainless gun. You are right they are not as “pretty” as the Ubertis but they are a heck of a handgun.

The New models are closer in dimensions to the Uberti and seem nice too but the Uberti has the real case hardening and a nice blue that Ruger has never really offered.

The one thing nice about the Rugers though is that you can run them HARD and never worry about them holding up.  But I’ll be an occasional participant.  No intention of going all out, just a few weekends of fun a year.

But I’ve been out of the game for a while.  Any suggestions?

I am not a fan of lever action pistol caliber carbines at all...I want a rifle...my Uberti 1873 in ..45 Colt fills the bill nicely...I like the long sight plane...plus Uberti makes a damned handsome rifle..

Ubertti makes a beautiful 1873.  They can be slicked up and short stroked to run really fast.  Mine is smooth, was done by a noted cowboy gunsmith but I handled someones that he did that had thousands more rounds and it was like butter.  The more you shoot it the slicker it gets.  If you can run a 97 without dropping shells they are faster than a double.  Takes some practice.
