  Not that I'm disagreeing with the thread's title, but this "Real Technology" seems to require a second steam engine as a backup, plus a diesel-electric engine as a backup to the backup. . .all to carry only what looks to be about ten passenger cars.

  I'm not sure why they're running 844 in the same train - but the diesel has something to do with braking.

  I believe the DE is there, primarily, to provide power to the passenger and dining cars...there's a large electrical demand there...
