Hunting diary entries..............

Been out and about for the odd hunt over the past 12 days.
Hunting diary has a couple of strange entries......

3 Peacocks...... ( 204Ruger)
2 Pea hens......     "      "
1 Fallow deer Spiker.... ( 7mm08)
1 Cow............( 222)
1 Horse......... ( 204 Ruger)
1 wild cat......  ( 7mm08)
3 possums..... (Suzuki Vitara)
2 rabbits.......... ( "            "    )


Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....

    When I woke up in the morning I wasnt planning to shoot a horse, BH and I were heading  up to a place that grazes horses to deal with an abundance of peacocks.
    Bh rang and asked me what rifle I was taking.....I said the 204. He then said you might want to go bigger cos the farmer has asked us to put down a horse. Having had experience at putting down horses I knew it was more about shot placement rather than caliber.

    Dont know if any of you have had to put down a horse, but in case you are in the position where you have to, I will explain how I do it.
    Take an imaginary line from the left ear to the top of the right eye, another line from the right ear to the top of the left eye. Aim approx 1" above where the lines intersect and it will drop on the spot dead. If you simply take a line from the ear to the centre of the eye and shoot at where the lines cross you may miss the brain, all hell will break loose and it wont be pretty.

    One thing about a frontal shot. Even though the shot is immediately effective, most horses will lunge forward as they drop...........if you are standing too close and dont move back quick enough, it will knock you down.

    The horse was a 30 yr old retired racehorse and had suffered a major injury to its back. It could still walk with difficulty but every time its rear left leg took weight it would collapse on that side. It had difficulty in balancing when grazing and was in obvious pain. Unfortunately the vet was unable to get there so I got the job.
    The 204 was used and at the shot the horse immediately dropped but still managed to lunge forward about 3-4' as it dropped. This was the 4th horse I have had to put down and it never sits easy on the mind.

    The cow had a cancerous growth in its eye which over a relatively short period grew into its throat and stopped it from eating. The only thing that could be done was to put it down humanely. I used the 222 and it dropped on the spot.

    The wild cat took a 120gr PSP from the 7mm08 at about 70yds which made short work of it.

    The spiker was an offhand shot at 158m. 120 gr sierra completely shattered and almost severed the neck dropping it on the spot.

    So what did you do with the horse and cow after putting them down?

    Just curious.

      They were both buried. Thank god for tractors and diggers.

    Try this.....imagine any opening line and follow it with"And then the murders began". Works for pretty much everything.
