    Very cool.  I hope this is legit.  Battery tech has always been the limiting factor when it comes to viable solar power, and electric cars.  If this pans out I look forward to telling the oil companies, and the power utilities to F OFF!

    I hope they're everything they're cracked up to be. I read an article in IEEE Times about 30 years ago about a promising new way to make solar panels that would bring their price down to about 50 cents a watt if I remember correctly. Some kind of sputtering technology. The panels weren't as efficient as conventional ones, but at one 20th the cost, who's counting? It was said that it would take 10 years to come to fruition.
    I've never heard anything else about it - must not have worked out. I hope this does, but "we'll see".

    They were probably talking about polycrystaline panels. Poly is cheaper to make than mono but they last about 1/5th as long. Poly is still very popular and common but for smaller projects. Alot of the panels in those portable kits at Harbor Freight are poly kits. They work and they're cheap but they're not a good long term solution.

    Hmmm - ok. I learned something new today. The article "back then" didn't say anything about lifespan. *shrug* How is the efficiency of the poly panels vs mono?

    Poly is less efficient than mono since it's made from several cells melded together.
    It's a good read if you have time.
    monocrystalline solar panels have solar cells made from a single crystal of silicon, while polycrystalline solar panels have solar cells made from many silicon fragments melted together.
    To make solar cells for monocrystalline solar panels, silicon is formed into bars and cut into wafers. These types of panels are called “monocrystalline” to indicate that the silicon used is single-crystal silicon. Because the cell is composed of a single crystal, the electrons that generate a flow of electricity have more room to move. As a result, monocrystalline panels are more efficient than their polycrystalline counterparts.

    Mono versus Poly

    Poly is often smooth with little or no space between cells.

    Its been a few years since I was involved with solar - used 20 watt panels for marine research that cost just under $200/ea. And still had to do a lot of work to marinize them.
