  It might be worth while to leave this thread in the 2nd amendment forum.  That way if people wish to discuss political ramifications from this event, it does not muddy the self defense thread.  Just my 2 cents.

  I agree. There are legitimate 2A issues related to this shooting. You have the usual turd balls saying the solution is more gun control, and at the same time Texas recently passed a law that allowed CCW in churches that may have helped prevent further deaths.

  If I was a gun grabber, I would argue that the guy was there just to steal the collection plate and get away. Because the church members were armed, the situation was escalated to the point where 3 people died-- if they were unarmed, he would have taken the collection plate and slithered away without anyone being harmed.

  That would be a pretty easy claim to disprove.  The video makes it pretty clear that he wasn't there to rob the collection plate.
  
  Also, according to reports I have read, the shooter was known to the security force of the church and had made threats on the pastor's life.  I live about 200 miles from where this happened, and Sunday was a fairly warm day, certainly not the kind of day one would normally wear a long coat.  Seems like that should have been a clue.
  
  With all that said, I now have to wonder why the security folks didn't pat him down before allowing him into the church.  Better yet, why allow him in at all?

  Anyone know whether it was a legal gun purchase yet.  I have seen no mention.  He had a felony charge that was lowered to a misdemeanor.  But I do not see anything specific that would prevent a purchase.

  I noticed the same thing. Usually we know how/where/when the gun was purchased by the end of the day.

  (I am not saying this in any way to belittle the hero.  He is a hero and has my unending respect). The only reason the media is reporting anything on the good-guy that saved the day is that he is “former law enforcement”.  Helps reinforce the notion that only cops and govt should have guns.
