  I don't know.  Mine was part of the AC/heating system when we built our house but my understanding is that they are not horrendously expensive.

  I don't need one in the summer because I have a swamp cooler, but the winter is a different story here.

  In New York it was essential for us in the winter.  In NC it’s not really necessary at all.

  they will help in making your house feel warmer make sure you get one that the water flows through and not a drum type with standing water they breed bacteria
