  for plain jane drill bits ive used the "Drill doctor".  for what it is and does it works.

  Old timers like me learned to sharpen drills by hand in hi school shop pretty much limited to 1/4" and up, for most sharpening i use an old General Tools # 825 tool. Of all the angles I prefer the 135 degree split point, been looking for years for a reasonable priced grinder that will do a 135SP. Most of my larger bits, if they just need a touch up I still do them by hand.

  I must correct part of the above, I just found out that that Drill Doctor # 750X will do 135 split point , its about $125.00

  I saw that - and am contemplating whether I should get the 750 or the 350. I have "a few" split point bits, but not many.

  This. I touch up drill bits a lot and I use a $100 vertical belt sander, which has a whole lot more uses than a dedicated bit sharpener. The learning curve isn't that bad. After you do it wrong a half dozen times you pretty well figure out how to do it right. And like jay said....sharpening sub-1/4" aint worth the effort.

  I use cbn wheels on my slow speed grinder.

  Apparently free thought is punished, and conformity is required, while peckerless cowards run the show.

  i forgot which one we got.
  
  but it will do the carbide and the drills with 2 different angles and the plain bits.
  
  we got ours years 10+ ? years ago.  im sure there are new versions out there but so far, its  worked for 90% of the bits we have in our house.  After we got it for xmas and after it warmed up, over a month or so, we gathered up all fo the loose and bit sets we had and sharped them all.  
  
  I remember when i was younger, i got a drill bit set from my dad.  It was his way of telling me to ruin my own.
  
  as far as hand sharpening on a bench grinder.  I did try that with some of my dad bits too.  but it takes time, many many many attempts and constancy.  My machine shop instructor in HS could cut a thread cutting tool by eye on a grinding wheel and it was from 1/4 inch stock. He asked for my square stock to use as a "demo" for all.   I used that tool for the rest of my class.
