Ward Burton rifle

Also known as the 1871 Springfield, a bolt action 50-70 single shot rifle, the first bolt rifle so far as I know submitted to the US Army for trials.  Two Army generals, Ward and Burton designed it, and Springfield made about 1000 for Army trials in 1871.

This one was at my LGS for some gunsmithing work and I got to hoist and examine it.  The owner told the LGS owner he saw three of these rifles somewhere on display, and they had been painted black, stock and all, for some reason.  He bought all three and contacted Springfield for a clean-up, which they agreed to do in exchange for two of them. He agreed and they basically restored the rifle without refinishing it...it looked old.

Forgotten Weapons has an episode on the1871 if you want to know more about it.  The gun wasn't chosen over the Trapdoor, which is another story.
Concealed carry is for protection, open carry is for attention.
