  I wish I would have photographed the old b&w prints my dad has of grandpa and his freinds trapping in the early 1900's up in Keewenaw. He said he got rid of all the old Victors many years ago and regrets it. 
  
  I once watched a beaver struggling to remove a tree branch frozen in ice. Didn't see me because of the intensity of the struggle. Made grunts just like we would under the same burden.

  Beavers definitely have a work ethic. Some years ago, we were contacted by a land owner who lost eight apple trees in one night. We only caught one beaver near his property.

  What brand and size conibear trap is that?

  Duke 330. The dogs are custom. OEM dogs tend to knock the fur off, leaving a little bald spot. No bueno.

  Other than the dogs do you like the Duke traps?  I have been slowly buying trapping stuff, but have avoided the traps and the stretchers.  I am going to make the stretchers myself, buy the traps are an investment, and I would like to make the right investment.

  Duke body gripping traps, Bridger foothold traps, and Lil Grizz dog proofs are my preferred traps. Don't care for long springs foot holds at all. 
  
  I modify all of the traps to some degree except the Bridgers. 
  
  Traps will last almost forever. The only enemy is thieves. You will have traps stolen.

  Thanks. Went all out today and set muskrat, otter, mink, raccoon, and more beaver sets. 
  
  I've experienced many forms of thievery. Other trappers, hunters that have destroyed a coyote and take the trap, and animal rights people who've left notes. In Idaho, all of these acts are criminal, but I haven't caught anyone. Yet.

  The only negative experience I had with a trap was when ruffed grouse hunting in PA.  Someone put a dirt hole set with bait/spray right on the main walking path into the place.  When I turned back to see where my dog was, I could tell by his curiosity and how he was digging that he was about to trigger a foothold trap.  Before I could shock him and get him away, it discharged and locked him down, causing him to yelp a good bit.  I got over quickly and released him without further incident, and because they were spaced properly, he was pretty much unharmed.  
  
  I wasn't really mad.  Only annoyed with it being set up that close to the entry way.  I simply left the trap released above ground for the trapper to reset when he returned.

  Yeah, without really knowing a thing about trapping, my gut instinct told me that it was not smart to set a trap that close to a groomed walk-in trail.  Six feet definitely seems like nowhere near enough when my dog can point a quail from 20 yard away.
