My 2018 Iowa archery buck mount is done

When I told my taxidermist I was deploying late last year, his first reaction was "oh, I can get your buck done before you go."  He wasn't behind his stated schedule at all, he just wanted me to see it before departing.  I told him, no, that was not necessary.  I wanted him to take his time and work on it while I was away.  Turned out, that was a good thing...

...when he got to working on it, he ended up needing a bigger form than the one he initially ordered!

This guy was a brute.  Not overly impressive in spread, but his antler mass and body size was ridiculous.

I'm extremely please in what I see in this quick shop photo.  The face is natural and the neck really captures how thick he was.  I specifically asked him to do some asymmetrical ear work because I'm just annoyed at how every single shoulder mount seems to have the same, high-alert ear pose.  It was a risk that could've turned out goofy, but he nailed it - much more natural and exactly what I was after.

As a reminder, this is the buck on the day I brought him home.

Oh, don't worry.  There's plenty of room over the bed...and on the couch.

That mount looks great!  Worth the wait I’m thinking.

Not only big, but I think he's still checking the trail for safe passage to the corn field.

I think he did an excellent- natural looking mount. Congrats on a trophy worth hanging on the wall. It will give decades of memories.

I enjoy visiting homes and getting the people to share the stories about the hunts.

Thanks for all of the compliments, guys.  I had never pulled the trigger on a shoulder mount for any previous deer because it had to be something truly special.  This guy was finally it.  Just a great hunt to remember: big deer, making a scrape when I shot him, snowfall morning - just an all around memory worth capturing.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: this buck was laboratory tooth aged at only 3 years old. :|  I can only imagine him as a 5 year old.

Wow! That is an excellent looking mount. It looks like the deer is alive.

The guy who did my mount has the privilege of working on some of the most massive Midwest bucks I've ever seen.  This was one I saw him working on one time that absolutely dwarfed my buck - sucker had 7 points on one side before off a point!

Unreal, and as you've pointed out its good that you had him sit on it, take his time to get it the way you wanted.

Another Iowa buck? Nebraska? Kansas? Just curious.

The deer pics you've posted over the years really are evidence of the quality of Midwest deer.

Never mind, Luis - I just re-read the thread title.

No worries, man!  Thanks for checking out the thread.  yeah, this one took a while, which is exactly what I wanted when investing in a mount hence the 2018 revisit.  The rush jobs seldom turn out this nice.

Congratulations Luis, nicely done.  That man did my 7 point, 8 with a broken brow tine, taken from the Standing Rock reservation.  He said that he could put the tine back on the mount, but I declined because that was the way he looked when I killed him....robin

    Robin -

No way!  You used O’Hare Taxidermy for your mount??  Really cool coincidence and I applaud your decision to leave your back as he was taken.  Branden does excellent restoration work that looks completely authentic for folks that want that, but I’m with you: unless the damage happened after the hunt due to an unfortunate accident while transporting the deer from the field, I leave them as they were.
