Dang wife/Darn computer

My wife managed to wipe out 10 years worth of bookmarks off MY computer by adding 2 that I needed for home schooling my 10 year old. She had the bright idea, that I ultimately followed against reservation, to do a system restore. I did not think that would bring my bookmarks back but figured what harm would it do. Boy was I wrong. It blue screen bricked my computer. Tried all kind of command prompt repairs to no avail. The reset would not even function. Figured I would try and get a restore USB from her computer but my USB was too small. Read that a DVD ISO image would require a dual layer DVD. Had a new computer in my cart but figured WTH, give a regular DVD a shot. Burned the ISO to a standard 4gb DVD and it seemed to take it. Booted my computer from it and all was going well until it got stuck the windows screen saying "getting ready". Tried several times with no luck. Then I remembered to delete the drive I was trying to put it on.

BINGO-BANGO...I am typing on my new install after 2 days. Still not happy about losing all my crap, but none of it was a huge deal anyway.

Just a frustrated man's rant.

"Of course you have a backup"...
Seems like just about everybody - including me - learns this the hard way. No such thing as too many backups!

I know, I know. Have had it several years and it has always ran good. Couldn't find the original recovery disk and had not backed it up in a few years. If she would have kept her hands off it I would still be oblivious to backing up on a regular basis. Thankfully I only use it for web surfing and saving some less important files. More of a pain in the butt lesson than a catastrophic one. We have our own computers for a reason. She was hiding out for 2 days while I banged my head against it... :D

SomeMook's boss told his wife, "If I'd killed you the first time I thought about it, I'd be out of prison by now".

    Sorry for your sorrow.

Ugh. Won't bore you with details but when mine gets on there it's like I spend the next week un-doing whatever the hell she did. I used to try and explain, politely....but I just got welts on the side of my head from the cast iron fry pan.

Its a long story, but the short version is many years ago, I had six copies of my software that I was writing/maintaining/expanding and I had to go all the way out to copy number SIX to restore my world. Two copies were destroyed, two copies were on a computer that suddenly died, two copies were on our network where one was inaccessible, but the other was available. Pulled it "all the way back" so to speak to get things running. The dead computer was revived later and the copies there were fine, but the point was that I needed to release a new version NOW, and a perfect storm of mishaps made that almost impossible.
I recommend AT LEAST two backups for anything you care about - and one of those backups should be off site - via a cloud backup or physically removing backup media "someplace else" - or both!
At my last job, one of the scientists had her laptop stolen with her irretrievable data. She had listened and she had a backup on a separate hard drive - which was in the bag with the laptop! Some of the data could be re-created, some of it was partially recovered from posters and other paper media, but the bulk of it was gone forever.

Don’t mean to get into a debate but my devices are iCloud backed up every day.  Only had to do a restore ONCE in almost 20 years of combined Apple use (wife and I) but it was flawless. Just saying...

Have only had to do a new install once on MY windows computers. Started yesterday.... :disappointed:

I have had to do them several times on hers. They were generally older at the time, but it's something she does to brick them.

I bought 2 spare hard drives that fit my laptop and alternate cloning on them. I always have a 1month old clone and a 2 month old clone in the safe. I should keep one off site but... The cloud is just someone else's hard drive, I'll keep my data as local as possible.

Women have a special touch with electronics.  My wife’s car has a ton of tech, mine even more.  Mine works flawlessly and once a month I have to get in HER car and reset EVERYTHING!!!

Nothing to debate - its a backup and its off site. I have a cloud backup, a local backup (the NAS I've been babbling about), and I'm going to implement a 3rd backup similar to Joeg52 by rotating a pair of backup drives in and out of a safe deposit box as a sort of poor man's Iron Mountain. That will give me 3 backups: one onsite, two offsite, plus the original.

    Car, ****, car!

Anyway wife actually LOVES cats, BUT is HIGHLY allergic to them (YAY!!!) so if there was a robo-cat out there she'd probably make me buy her one...

Furry's not a problem.  Shave Linefinder's cat and you have enough fur for all of them.  Just glue it on.

Speaking of Linefinders cat....I thought I was going to have to take her to the vet today. Lethargic, wouldn't eat (even her treats), and just not herself for the past 3 days. Well, my stepdaughter bought her some fancy Rachel Ray dry catfood, Sophie buried her face in it and gobbled for 3 minutes like she'd never eaten before, and now she's running around the house like a crazy person.

Damn cat was on a hunger strike.
