  Agree, what I am wondering is, how the residents of the state feel.  Wondering if residents or someone from Washington told them they should change the flag

  All of this cracks me up. In a couple hundred years when we are all dead and gone, and this is nothing but a chapter in a history book, it won't have made a lick of difference. What a waste of a relatively short life span pissing and moaning about stupid !@#$.

  I'm in Mississippi. 
  
  There were a lot of factors. The SEC and NCAA said we would no longer be able to host baseball/softball regionals. Nor basketball playoffs. The baseball regionals are big deals here. Mississippi State has hosted many baseball regionals and they consistently break NCAA  attendance records. Ole Miss to a lesser extent. MSU has hosted early rounds of the Women's NCAA basketball tournament.  Both events are big economic events for the state. MSU will have over 10k people attend a regular Friday night baseball game. NCAA Regionals held at MSU are about the only ones that make a profit for the NCAA. 
  
  Quite a few athletes have said they will no longer play if the flag doesn't change.
  
  According to economic developers/recruiters in the state, the flag has limited us in attracting new businesses. 
  
  Over all,  it was just the right time to change it. I think most here want it to change. I've wanted it to change for a long time. I know what that flag represented and it is time for it to change. The stars and bars represent slavery and everyone knows it. 
  
  I don't mean to be ugly but, I'm not interested in a discussion or comments about slavery, states rights, or taxes. This is the 21st century. The South lost the war. GET. OVER. IT.
  
  Btw, I've lived in this state for all 57 of my 57 yrs. I have ancestors who fought for both sides. None owned slaves to my knowledge. But, I wouldn't be surprised if at least 1 ancestor did. And I am a certified history teacher.  I think I have enough knowledge about history to have an informed opinion.

  I feel the same way about almost everything we've "discussed" in the Political section and what's being argued about on social media.

  Having only passed through the state I know little of how residents felt about the change. I was wondering if a outside force was pushing the issue

  Yes, outside force was a factor: especially concerning sports. Our 3 largest universities have held baseball regionals in recent years. So has 1 DII  school. That same school has played  DII football playoff games at home. Those events bring millions to the state and host cities. 
  
  As to economic development, I don't think it's been that big of an issue. In the past 10 yrs or so we've successfully recruited plants from Nissan, Toyota, Yokahoma Tire and Contintenal Tire. That's a whole lotta jobs. 
  
  In the end though, I think most Mississippians realized it was time to change.

  Personally I think it should be up to the voters, but given the economic reality of NOT going along with the removal is a problem for everyone. I am just tired of all the bullying from the left, including corporate and private.

  We had a vote several years ago and it failed to pass. The state legislature approved the current design in 1894; not the voters. I don't know if we could ever get a new flag if it was left to the ignorant rednecks.

  Never had an argument here in 11 years, don’t want one now but what gives you the “enlightened wit” to call anyone “ignorant rednecks?” Are you better than blue collar “ ignorant red necks” because you are a teacher?

  The vote yesterday was, I think, to suspend the rules to allow a new bill to be introduced this late in the legislative session. The bill which was introduced and passed the House today was to create a 9 member commission which will select a new flag design by 9/14 which will be on the ballot in Nov. The Senate is in session now considering the bill.
  
  The bill states that the new flag can not contain any Confederate symbols and must Have the motto "In God We Trust". 
  
  The voters of MS will vote on the new flag design.

  What amuses me is that slavery existed for 89 years under the Stars and Stripes that the 4 years of the Confederate flag. Oh! … and I'm still waiting for reparations and an apology from Italy for what Caesar did to my German ancestors back in 44 BC - that rat bastard!
