This will be more of a hunting rifle than a LR Target Rig.

I have other guns for dedicated LR work.

But, this one will easily let him play at 800 yards.

Just so happens I set my Pop's new rifle up with a VX5 2-10 x42 with 30mm tube and HD glass.  Thinking it would work REALLY well on this rig.

I believe you went the right direction. Except that it's not a Savage... B)

I have a 4.5-14x Mark 4 (MOA Turrets) he will start with.

I finally shot a 6.5 creed and now understand the attraction- brand new Savage model 11 6.5 creed package gun with the Nikon 3x9 scope- Hornady American Hunter 129 grain- first 3 shots a touching cloverleaf at 100 yds off a folding table and a bag- very mild recoil, right between a 243 and 308

The ransom has been paid. She should be awaiting me at my LGS when I return home some time next month or so.

Lucky young man!  This will be a certain keepsake for him down the road and the fact that his father built it and just didn't pull a box of a store shelf is fantastic.  Great job!
