A .22 pistol is never a mistake. Not, maybe, the first handgun for self defense, but damned good to learn basic marksmanship....or markswomanship. Cheap to shoot and you'll take the lessons back home with you.
Concealed carry is for protection, open carry is for attention.
BTW....don't bother with head shots at this point, unless you're doing it for fun. Try for center mass every time at this point. Much like sharpening a knife.....you can hone your skills later. But much sooner than later than you expect.

Thanks Mike. The instructor was pretty rapidly barking shots for me to try and he said "two head shots". But yeah, vital shots.
I went shooting with an instructor for the first time today and shot a Ruger SR .22 and I loved it! Most of my shots
at first were pretty accurate, and then I started getting a little
overloaded. Switched to a S&W .22 revolver and you can see where my
shots started going off to the right. Then switched back to the Ruger
with a laser for 10 rounds, including the head shots and the shots to
the colored shapes.
It convinced me that I like the Ruger .22 and when I go looking for another firearm, I think that's a good place to start.
Range was 20 feet.
Hey, every single one of those shots would have produced a good effect against a BG. Good for you!
In the Marines, we were taught "center mass every shot". Attempted head shots were discouraged. Any hit from high lungs to low guts was much better than him hearing one whistle a half-inch past his ear.

And a Ruger is very seldom a mistake either. I have several, including my first ever pistol purchase, a Ruger Mark III .22lr semi-auto. Now superseded by the Mark IV - but I shoot it more than any other firearm I own, it pretty much goes with me EVERY time I go to the range.

The Mark II is a fine pistol...trigger is a little problematical, but it's a solid gun. I had one until I decided it was time to clean it...NOPE. It's a nightmare. I had mine long before Internet videos showing how to break one down and reassemble it. You seldom need to take one apart, if ever, but if you're a clean gun nut, there are better, easier .22s to clean.

The military as a general rule wants center mass for several reasons. One they are high percentage hits and disable the combatant, prevent him from fighting on. Special forces prefer double tap to take the combatant out quick, eliminate the threat.
The second reason for center mass hits psychological. When your comrade is dead he lies there. When he is wounded he crying in pain seeking help. As casualties mound there are less combatants and there is a psychological effect.
Third is logistical, a dead person can be handled and place on a truck after the battle. A wonder man need emergency medical attention, evacuation, and and surgical care. All this involves personal, transportation and supplies. You bleed the army not just the man.
In a SD situation I'm interested in hurting the bad guy enough to let me alone! I will do my best to put holes in his boiler room (collapse their lungs) and shut down his pump (heart), upper center mass. In every SD situation I've heard of if there's a second bad guy the little solidia will run usually pulling the trigger on his weapon in the wrong direction as he runs. Last week in Wilkinsburg, Pa that's exactly what happened during a home invasion. Two bad guys entered, two residents drew guns, one bad guy fired as they left the home and his partner was found dead a block away. Shot by his buddy!
Three would be robbers entered the LGS where I lived in Californiastan. As the entered the first produced a shot gun and was DRT, the second had a 357, he turned as he squeezer the trigger and hit his partner, the third guy. He continued to squeeze the trigger as he jumped over his wounded buddy and hit a kid across the street in the arm.
My friend, a black attorney, live in a bad neighborhood. He had gang and drug activity a in front of his house. Once he was beaten in his driveway and hospitalized. In violation of Ca. law he kept a SD Gun on himself when he could. One afternoon in his front yard the about ten little solidias challenged him. Twice he knocked their mouth to the ground. Humiliated he went to his partner to get a pistol out of his waist band. Pat didn't wait, he fire two 9mm rounds into the punks shoulder, He missed, no boiler room hits. The other little solidias scattered. Real brave!
My point is these fool that are out looking for trouble aren't smart, brave or trained. .32, 289, 9mm, 45.....Shoot quick, accurately, make them bleed and get as many shots as you can in their boiler room. The other fools will run!
