Pawn shop rescue!

After a long dry spell (covid) I was finally able to visit a few of the local gun shops. One place I've had good luck at had a sporterized "98 Mauser" in the rack. I could tell by the bottom metal it was an 03A3 so I took a peek. The stock was garbage but the metal was basically unmolested, except some knob head put Tru Oil on the metal and the stock. Bore is pristene 4 groove. Smith Corona!!

So I thought what a great candidate for restoration. So it came home and I ordered new wood and all the hardware to bring it back to original. The stock was used and a little rough, lots of rasp marks and oil soaked into the wood. I used Whiting to remove the oil and scraped the rasp marks smooth. Steamed out a few dents and repaired a few cracks.

I then sanded then stained the wood a dark reddish walnut military stain and applied several coats of BLO.
Finally got it back together yesterday

This is a shot of an original 03A3 at a another gun shop for comparison.

Happy 4th!!
