  Dark One

  The dark one in my view is more 'gritty'  and shows more detail....

  Voted dark, but the light is growing on me.
  
  I think dark better says "This is a manual on how to do camouflage".
  
  I think light better says "We're selling tactical products.  This photo makes you want to buy things"
  
  Comes down to what you're trying to say with it.

  The light one had me reaching for the gamma correction and HMS buttons.

  Dark One

  IMO, the real main difference between the two is depth of field.  The subject of the photo can be either the man or the mission. Both show the man in good detail and is a good photo by any criteria. The 1st indicates mission, since many salient details of both foreground and background are in good detail. The 2nd almost forces you to focus on the man only.
  
  To me, the first says "this is the mission". The 2nd says "this is the man".
  
  Depends on what feeling you want to convey. Depth of field can make or break a photo.
