Funny my daughter almost did the same. I think these things only really acquire a value as the distance from the time in the service gets longer?

Interesting... my future SIL has gifted me things that would be precious to most folks. To him they don’t seem to mean that much. I’ll hang on to them as I do my daughter’s and son’s “souvenirs” they’ve given me over the years. Hopefully some day they’ll return to them when they mean something more.
I had some mukaloks with wool inserts that were warm as any insulated boots as long as they were dry. I'd love to have them now for cold days at the range
