Considering our heavy snow months are March, April, and early May, I don't expect to see it anytime soon. Usually it's not that bad in Colorado Springs because we usually get warming days with plenty of sun in between snows. But we've had 2 months of night time lows in the teens and single digits, so whatever melts in the afternoon is pure ice by daylight. Ad nauseum. I'v had enough of winter here, and it's barely started.

Wow. It is now hitting the news that one of the main reasons that areas of the city of Austin was without water for up to 5 days (in areas). Guess what? It was massive incompetence!
The main water treatment plant here is required by law to have either backup power, or backup water reserves. The plant had both, AND had a backup treatment system! It had THREE backups to ensure that the city would not lose water in an emergency and lost power. So... what happened? Why didn’t it work?
No one knew how to operate the 50 year old switch that would fail over to the backup systems.
Snowing here right now. Hit 5 hours earlier than predicted. 40 F right now so it's turning to slush. If we hit the low 20's tonight, the streets are going to be a mess come daylight. That's what "almost Spring" is like around these parts. Only 2 more months to go. Sigh.

Just FYI. Those multi thousand dollar electric bills are what those people agreed to. They signed a contract for a variable rate and as long as everything ran 100% they paid less than everyone else. However, the flip side is that when the elec co needed to buy power, they pay more. So if they paid a grand less for 10 years, this year they pay 5 grand more.
No sympathy. They got a break for 50 years, this year it didnt pay off. Gambled and lost. Not my problem. They want to not pay the multi thousand 2$ bill? Then they should be back charged the rate that everyone else paid since they started service.

I'll sorta agree to disagree to a point on this one! Yes, they signed up for this variable rate. However, I'm not sure in their contract states it can go up 7500% without any notification. That's severe price gouging! Also, if there going to raise your rate 7500% than the consumer needs to know.
If these go to court and power company is going to lose. Doubling or tripling the consumers bill is one thing, 7500% is another thing! Also, most power company applied a different variable rates usually in the 100% range. Explaining 7500% is going to be a challenge and the judge and/or jury won't buy it. My thought, before these go to court the power company is going to settle. If not the vast majority of their customers will drop them and move to another provider. They don't need that type of press!

It isnt gouging if they are passing the exact cost on to the customer. You take the lesser costs when the energy costs less and you take the increased cost if it costs more.
If they want to get out of it, the judge should make them pay ALL of the money they didnt pay, plus interest, processing fees, late fees, filing fees, the cost of the trial, 100% penalty for being a deadbeat, and everything else that is NOT the pwr companies problem because they lived up to their part for however many years they had the service.

I find it interesting that the Govt. is offended if folks profiteer off toilet paper and hand sanitizer, but gouging the Texas power grid and passing on the cost to the customer is OK, contract or no contract, pretty tough to imagine getting an electric bill on the scale some folks got when you signed up, I think if they knew what they were getting charged as they were receiving it folks would have been more prudent.
I doubt it. The same type of people that put in non cold hardened gas pumping stations and unheated windmills and didnt want to pay to keep the knowledge to know how to use the emergency system at the water company are the ones who took the cheap electricity bill. No concept of the future. Grasshoppers.
Its not gouging if that is the price. If the pwr co is inflating their profit, then it is gouging and they should be hammered. The people who got stuck with tons of hand sanitizer did exactly that. They bought at market price, hoarded the product, then tried to resell at a inflated price for profit only. Not what happened here. If it is the cost of the product billed in the manner that you signed up for, then it isnt.
Is it gouging to enforce a payment on a mortgage with a variable interest rate if the interest rate goes from 1.9 to 16? Nope, even if you couldnt imagine it. (though you will probably see it within a year or 2) This is EXACTLY the same. The bill came due. Not the banks fault, the pwr co's fault, or anyone elses problem.

Oddly enough, my February electric bill was a little less than my January bill, and relatively low. I guess it really does pay to go 2 1/2+ days without power.
