  Only slightly safer.  The skins on those old bombers were mighty thin and offered no protection from bullets.

  That would be scary since in T/O and landing the ejection seat could be useless.

  Speaking of the B-1, has anybody else caught wind of the fact that a proposed upgrade was supposed to be called the B-1R for "regional?"

  That's an older upgrade, dating back to the mid-2000s.  It would be a faster bomber, with more limited range.  Air-to-air missiles.  And F-22 engines (that gives it the faster speed.)
