I have the entire Phantasm collection on DVD. I probably watch all of them about once a year, just because. 😁
They're stupid low budget films (Except II which was a stupid high budget film) that don't have much continuity between them and don't make much sense. But for whatever reason, they have become favorites of mine - and "horror" isn't my usual cuppa.
BBOYYYY!!
Why they replaced Michael Baldwin (Mike) in the first one with James Le Gros as Mike in the second one still has me puzzled. I'm just glad they replaced him back by the third one. They pulled a Darren Stevens switch-a-roo but everyone noticed 🤣
Paramount forced the change onto Coscorelli - wasn't his choice. Yea, everybody noticed that one - I don't think anyone noticed or cared about "Derwood" getting switched out.
Ah! "Event Horizon". Another horrid movie that's so bad its good. I was working with an absolutely horrid new computer once upon a time - all sorts of strange and wonderful problems. As it was going to be installed on the bridge of a ship, I named it "Event Horizon". I think its still there, although I do know its had at least one "brain transplant" (motherboard swapout).
Another "so bad its good" movie is "The Core". Horrid science! Told a geologist co-worker of mine about it. She told me later that she'd never seen such horrid science!
-Zorba, "The Veiled Male"

Adhering to the non-gun, non-war criteria, I have watched 'Rudy', The Blind Side and Field of dreams multiple times. Pride of the Yankees is a classic, Bang the Drum slowly (very young Robert De Niro) and Brian's Song are both good movies IMO. Since some of the movies mentioned previously do kind of skirt the OP's formula, I have always enjoyed Edward. G. Robinson in Brother Orchid (it is technically a gangster movie, but not a shoot-em-up).
By far and away, the movie The Water Diviner with Russell Crowe is an excellent war's aftermath movie. There are some battle scenes, but the movie is focused on a farmer's search and attempt to recover the remains of his sons who fought at Gallipoli. If you want a good drama, I highly recommend this one.

The Core was a disaster! Not a disaster movie but a disaster of a movie!
The physics of that movie only works on the big screen and people's imagination 🤣
On the plus side, it had a few good lines. From time to time when things get difficult at work, someone always comes up with "Plan C" "Somehow!" That's usually the route we take 😂
Another fun movie is Sucker Punch. Hot girls in a movie with three layers of reality. If you don't pay attention you won't have a clue what's going on 😁
It's an action/fantasy/drama. Lots of gun play, sword play, Lasers, futuristic/Lord of the Rings/World War I stuff all thrown into a blender and hit frappe.
Don't worry about it making a great deal of sense, it's all occuring in someone's imagination because reality is worth than fantasy.
Fun movie if you're really desperate for something to watch.
@zorba you might want to watch it just for the outfits.
👍

I'll have to check it out. The Core can't be any worse than "Elsa, She Wolf of the SS"! Or "Iron Sky" for that matter.
Speaking of "Sky" movies - "October Sky" is great. True story of a kid growing up in Coal country who wants to build rockets. Another heart warmer, an old fashioned movie is "A Walk in the Clouds".

Coal Miner's Daughter is still a favorite in our household. Tommy Lee and Sissy kick butt in that movie.
