Deer Management

This is my second year having pretty much full control of my friend’s deer management. By that, I mean he trusts me and while we communicate, he tells me to do what I want. 
this is strictly for my friend’s high fenced “House Pasture”. 120 acres fenced around his house where he plays and has pets. 
Last year, we did a deer survey and I counted 84 Whitetail, and I think 24 Axis. 
During the fall, we took 29 Whitetail and I found 3 dead of natural causes. 

I did a survey last weekend and one this weekend. Anyone want to take a guess how many Whitetail we have in the House Pasture?

    The problem is, since feeding the cotton seed, there are VERY few cull bucks and choosing does to shoot is always difficult!
    The biology will likely recommend 30ish deer again this year.
    We are gonna need to sell some trophy hunts or shoot some nice bucks ourselves this year. We can’t keep taking from the bottom or there will be a huge age gap!

    Selling hunts is always a possibility, as long as you control what buck(s) you want shot.
    Killing a nice buck for yourself is always nice.  Even more special since you had a big hand in making it happen.

    I’m gonna push him hard to sell a few hunts this year. Of course, I will be with the hunter and there will definitely be a few protected bucks. 
    I won’t shoot a nice buck. Rather pass that off to my boy or friends.

    Sounds like you might even be falling behind a little on the required culls, though I imagine that varies a lot with weather and available forage conditions.

    At any rate, I do not see a switch to "Impossible Meat" in your future. :)

    I bet more than one. There’s no way I saw all the fawns and I bet there’s 5-10 adults I missed.

    Yeah, we obviously didn’t get them all counted last year and didn’t take enough deer. 
    The sad part is, he used to have 20+ Axis as well. We only took 4 last fall. 
    That snow storm we had last February wiped them out. I can only find 7.Axis on the place. 3 bucks and 4 does. Unless they are REALLY hiding, I don’t think we’ll be shooting axis this fall.

    Safe to say you're at more than one deer for 1.4 acres -  seems like they're getting pretty thick.  At what point does this become a pest control problem?

    Ask how many pigs, coyotes, bobcats, and varmints are included with the cost :)

    During last years drought, it was rough, they were skinny. We had to feed a lot. This year, they are in good health but still feeding a lot to supplement. 
    We need to shoot some deer.

    Varmints/Predators are free!!  Pigs too. They just depend on crops in the ground and farmers having a problem.
