Bands instead of free weight

Since the company I work for cant seem to make up their mind of what my sced is and the Covid, the gym has been something I havent seen in a while.
I have been doing stuff at home and I decided to try bands. I got a 20 dollar set from Wally World.com ( I refuse to use Amazon and WW has had everything and most of the time cheaper) and they showed promise. Used them for 6 months and liked them, however the tube bands have a place where they are at full stretch.
I bought a full set of Undersun and so far, I like them. Still messing with different exercises but I can put the whole kit in my PC bag and take it to work. No excuses.

What I like
The bands keep resistance on 100% of the time. So you do negatives as well all the time.
You dont get the "bounce" at the end or beginning. If you are older, your joints know why thats bad.
There is plenty of resistance, and you can add a little or take away by slightly changing position.

What I dont like
Tough on the hands. You need to wear a set of mechanics gloves.
Good for upper body. Havent yet figured much else out, not intuitive
Finding the right resistance. Most are pretty easy, tricep kick backs I struggle to find the happy place.

So if anyone is looking for a portable alternative for exercise that doesnt bang the joints, I think they are worth while

I can introduce you to "Bianca". She does Zoom - as well as live - workouts. She will give you a new understanding of the word "pain"...

I was given a bar. And found a stack of iron weights abandoned in a parking lot. Not portable, but the price was right. Well worth saving up for.

Grew up on a black top crew. I knew how to puke from heat exhaustion and over exertion long before I became a Marine. Besides, I'm 57 and most of those I was rode hard and put up wet. I live with pain.

Difference with free weights, if your joints are well used, you get a pop at the bottom, and you can cheat in most exercises to the top, as well as a rest or neutral at the top.
The bands are on 100% of the time. You cant kip a band. You never get the gravity break, so you never let the weight go and you dont hurt the joints.
I still cant military press or do a tricep over the shoulder. Shoulders are not going to let that happen.

Some, but most are deep squats or lunges. Knees say no. I have figured out a squat that works pretty well with the band. Its in the works. I ski with 2 knee braces. I need to keep the muscles strong, but I will not sacrifice the joints and put myself on the bench.
You might expense a set. If you have patients that have lifted in the past but age has changed that, I think they are worth a look.

Watching this with interest. Last week I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my right shoulder. The Cat can bite me almost with impunity, because I can't do much about it. Any exercise advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some of the exerscises I do are slightly modified from ones that were given me by a physical therapist when I sought treatment for a sciatica many years ago. They're a good source when dealing with medical issues. I've not had any more such problems as the exerscises are preventative.

    Mike,
I feel your pain, literally. I was told after my arm was locked in place for 12 weeks that I would never move my shoulder again like I did before. They were right, but exercise has made the difference minimal. You have to go light, and there are things you wont do ever again that you did at 17. One of the reasons you wont do them is you did them at 17.
A joint supplement, twice a day helps.

Exercise can help with arthritis, but it is not a cure-all. I use Diclofenac for arthritis pain, and that is helpful. It is an NSAID, so if you can't tolerate those then stay away from it.

I can't take NASAIDS due to multiple BP meds. Tylenol is about it, and even that is frowned upon. Looks like I'm damned if I do or don't. Sure hurts trying to sleep, though.

Try some acupuncture Mike. For that matter, your subscapularis muscle might be imbalanced with the heart condition, chiropractic treatment with someone that can balance that out for you may be a temporary fix to see if it helps, at least see if that is the problem..

I also use Tramadol, which is a good substitute for drugs like Vicodin, Oxycodone, etc. The good thing about Tramadol is you shouldn't experience the constipation that the other drugs create.

If any of you are interested in all natural pain relief that actually works, you need to look into Kratom. It's changed my life.

To further on the Kratom. Its a powder, ground up leaf from a tree in Malaysia. It comes in powder or capsule form. It works well because although it's not an opioid, it works on the opioid receptors as an agonist which is why it's so good at pain relief. Moderate amounts can cause the same euphoria that pain pills give but thats never been the reason I take it. It actually works so well that it was outlawed in a few Asian countries for putting their opium market in the dirt.

Of course it is. It works and the government doesn't like competition.

Had this conversation with my 23 year old. I told him there is no such thing as "old man strength" Its that the only thing that stops you from pushing harder is pain, and old men are in pain all of the time so we just dont notice it.

As a side note, I was aware that a few states made it illegal but wasn't aware that yours was one of them. Theres a few articles out there that demonize it but if you look hard enough it usually leads back to folks that have a vested interest in pharmaceutical companies or suppliers. Theres also smear articles saying that there have been overdoses from it, but they also dont tell you that it was people combining it with central nervous system suppressants like pain killers, benzos, etc... Its actually an agonist/antagonist with a ceiling effect so technically you can't OD on it alone. And all I know is that it is amazing for the arthritis that I have in my lower back and allows me to function.
