A picnicking couple were repeatedly attacked by a bear on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, North Carolina, earlier this week. The couple drove themselves to a nearby hospital after the attack, where they were treated and released.

The bear attack occurred while the couple was having a picnic on a grassy hill on the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Folk Art Center in Asheville last Wednesday, the National Park Service reports. They were alerted to the bear’s presence by their dog.

“The unleashed dog ran towards the bear while barking loudly. Likely aggravated by the dog, the bear acted defensively toward the dog and the couple,” the National Park Service reports. “Over the next several minutes, there were repeated attacks by the bear while the couple retreated with their dog to the safety of their vehicle.”

    Add “tourists” that don’t understand where they are, and what lives there.  We lose a few pets a year to alligators here and people still walk their dogs right by the ponds and then freak out when Muffy becomes lunch.

    In many bear sightings some inside 10yds I’ve never experienced an advance. They either totally ignored me or took off running. Though No griz encounters.

    What do bears see when they encounter a human:

    Black bear - Danger!

    Brown bear - Enemy

    Polar bear - Food!!!

    And I won’t be twitchy with the trigger finger either.  I don’t get rattled much.  But I do have a dog that thinks she’s Godzilla and that seems to be a factor during encounters so I’ll be switching the Glock 43X to the Mountain Gun or the DW 10mm for dog walking duties.  No bear is gonna harm my Gracie!

    We have had quite a few bear encounters here at the house...some have involved us opening the door and By God, there he was...But we have only had one that didn't take off as soon as the encounter occurred.  That one came away from the door and moved over to the picture window and put a nose print on it. 
    Most of the time the bear encounters happen at night or early in the morning...but the last one happened in broad daylight, about 5 pm...when he got into our grain bin and took off carrying a 20 pound bag of sunflower seeds ...
    All that being said although there are always firearms close at hand, our bears...even the 400 pound one...have never behaved in a manner that would cause us to grab one...

    Yep…. Still not leaving the gun at hone when I walk the dog or go hiking.  Critters are all too used to humans around these parts and I had a Coyote confront me snarling and decline to run away until I out a .357 round in the ground between his legs (wife didn’t wNt me to shoot him).   Just a few days ago my MIL had a Fox tracking her while she was walking he adorable 8lb pooch.  Just got her a good blinding light and LE grade pepper spray to carry on her walks.

    Im not gonna be the one that assumes it’s just Yogi coming for my sandwich if I have the ability to carry insurance.

    Wouldn't surprise me if a bear ran as much or more than turning aggressive when a dog's involved. Still it's nice to carry a special friend into uncertainty.

    Wouldn’t surprise me either but the current tenant just had a sow run his lab back into his house.  Daughter closed the door right before the sow got to them.

    I live in almost downtown Colorado Springs. Thursday is "trash day". I leave for work well before daylight. On trash days, I peek around the corner before I drag the can to the curb. CSFD rescues more bears from trees than cats.

    Our adventure club, now 3 old friends out of an original 4, watch The Edge before outings into the Pacific NW wilderness areas. Gets everyone’s spirits up for the trek.

    guess one inherently knows if it’s an encounter or merely a sighting.

    I’ve seen bears push over the bear proof boxes and go in from the bottom. Good reason also to keep food out of the car in bear areas

    When I had the ranch we had to lock the barn doors every night.  Before this we used to just roll them together but the bastards figured out how to push the doors aside and got in and chewed the corners of very expensive/heavy duty grain/feed bins.  They didn’t get through the HEAVY plastic but darn if they didn’t do some damage to the lids trying.

    Report black bear encounters, and Grizzly bear sightings  - does that imply that reporting first-hand grizzly encounters are unlikely?  😁

    Regarding a discussion on the merits of carrying Bear Repellant / pepper spray I have heard it described as this:

    Black bear scat will be a pile about the size of a salad plate and will have bits of vegetation and bark in it and will smell like berries.

    Grizzly bear scat will be a pile about the size of a large dinner plate and will have bits of hair, cloth and teeth in it and will smell like pepper.
