About Derringers…

Just picked up this cutie. Chambered in .22 Short so as useless as **** on a bull except for shooting small rodents, but it’s a cute little thing and it makes me smile.  Made in CT USA a long time ago, Colt used to sell these under their name and the Colt ones bring a few $$$s.  But this I got from a partner for basically pocket change.  I’ll light it up tomorrow with some CC Shorts just for S&Gs.

While in the store I also picked up this holster in the “used” bin again for “family” pricing.  Not used at all, it has NO marks in the lining, don’t think a gun was ever in it before today.

You need to press the muzzle against their forehead! 🤣

Actually the sight setup is rudimentary but looks usable.  Basically you line up the front blade with the firing pin on hammer in the cocked position.

The barrel is rifled so there is that. If it really sucks I might have the chamber bored straight through to shoot .22 shot shells through a smooth bore and use it as snake medicine.

Never mind... Just deepen the chamber for 22 shot shells.

Fun little outing to the gun store!! Nice! Back in my LEO life we had one of those colts in the “gun locker.” It was evidence with the firing pin removes so we couldn’t shoot it! Cool little shooters.
Oh and you suck for the leather!!!

Thanks!  It’s always fun to find little odd guns and good leather is always a treat.

Found a few boxes of old Eley CB caps. That ought to do the trick.

Here she is, loaded and ready to rumble!

My uncle started clipping one of those colt .22 derringers to his pajama waistband after he was mugged in his own back yard in Houston. He made the decision to
always be armed- even when sleeping. This was in the ‘80s, before Texas had a CHL.

He had like 2 or 3 of the little guns from what I understand. They all disappeared after he passed away. I always wanted to add one to my collection after hearing those stories.

    Nice score!

Thanks!  I was thinking of making a simple Kydex holster and hang it around my neck. 😎

Or put a lanyard ring on it and use it for a key fob? 🙄

Orrrrrrrrr, I might use it as an action to build a mini rifle 😁

If you go with the mini rifle, you might could bore it out to .270, the action is obviously more than strong enough. 🙄

I was somewhat surprised at Wambi's post as on one of the sites I follow had a thread on Henry Deringer, who invented the derringer in 1825.I wonder why it wasn't invented earlier but I guess it was waiting on the percussion cap.  Henry died on Feb 28, 1868 so Wambi's post (Feb 28, 2022) could be in memoriam.

Had an opportunity on one of the Colt sets, Lord and lady I think it was called. Fun little shooters but didn't buy them.

As guns go there’s not much to them but of course having the Pony on them has increased their value over the years.  I’ve seen pristine sets bring $5-600 and they were sold for under $75 at retail when they came out in the late ‘60s IIRC.  They were so inexpensive that I remember two made into bookends.  Don’t know if was a factory offering or some crafty person did it so they could sell in New York where I saw them.

This is very much like the set I was offered back in the early 90's seem to recall they wanted $200 for them at that time. Neat little set but money was tight back then and they had no practical use so I had to pass on them.

Wow they’ve gone up a bit since the last time I shopped for one.  Mine being a Butler (the original manufacturer who made these for Colt) it won’t bring that kind of money but I bought it as a toy and maybe to wear at SASS matches in the future so I really don’t care about value.  I cleaned it yesterday and the bore is perfect and sharp so I’m good to go.
